State Health Department Should really look on this matter, especially the cover-up that was going on on the part of the Nursing Home. On the basis of time,as we all notice this happens more than a year later.

The state is a joke. My mother was abused in her nursing home by a nurse, the administrator wouldn't do anything about it, we the family filed a complaint with the state. The nursing home administrator lied, and harrased us for complaining, and the state did nothing, they said they investigated and it was unfounded, that is such crap. I see people get abused every other day in some form or another. The nursing home does not care nordoes the state, it's a money making business.
and to boot the nurse that abused my mother is still working there. I see people laying in crap for hours, calling and yelling to go to the bathroom. The problem is the state only puts minimun about of aides for 9 people the nursing homes get so much money per person per month, they could afford more aides. They only do what they have to, and you know what nursing homes are? "Warehouses for the discarded elderly", they don't like that our family is there day and night,(we see too much). It's horribe. These poor people are like cattle, eating the same old cold disgusting meals everyday. So sad that in our country no one revears the elderly. Guess I was raised different. But God see's everything that's being done and they will answer one day.
Thanks for listening..The experience was an eye opener.

I'm sorry that your family member had such a horrible experience.

It's very sad when the shortage of nurses has such a negative impact on patient care.

"People laying in crap for hours" is not a common occurrance even when homes are short staffed as SO MANY on LI are. Rest assured it is not the "state" who only puts the number of aides available in a home. It is the shortage of professional staff available. If these homes could get more workers they would. Unfortunately the cycle of overworked workers calling in sick leads to further short staffing etc...

Are there some Homes that staff at a bare minimum for $$ sake? Yes there are, but they are the minority. This business is simply not lucritive enoough to operate in that manner.

In essence you are trying to say that to take in the $$ the state gives per resident that the LTC will purposely short staff itself, but the overall cost of short staffing leads to increased costs in other ways paying for agancy replacement staff and family intiated lawsuits.....

The bottom line is that nurses and aides care about these patients, and generally don't want any harm to come to them. Does it happen anyway? of coarse it does, but to believe it happens systematically and with malice is not fair to all the nurses who do a great job.

That's good news! I am praying that whatever cover up they ( smithtown nursing home) will do , the State will notice it. Devil's work will not always win...there's an end....now is the time to end. They became rich because of patient's medicare reimbursements, below wage rates of nurses salaries and saving money by under staffing.

I AM AN ONLY CHILD. convential wisdom is for the child ( I am 66 ) of an elderly parent with assets is to transfer it out to themselves to get medicaid when the parent goes to a nursing home. Keep the family assets intact. It is what the parents want for most of their surving children. They didn't work their entire lives to give their legacy to a greedy nursing home - which most of them are.

MY mother has enough resources to remain home. It costs money. It is NOT to save money, it is to give her far better care that she can ever be expected to receive in a Nursing Home.

You don't ask for much in a nursing home. Most family members would be satisfied if their parents are changed on a regular basis.

GREED is all it is about. Many nursing homes have figured out a way how to take your remaining money and clean you out before you die. Why should the children get the money?

I have never transferred the money because I didn't want the responsibilty of the money. It is their money until such time they are no longer with us. I have full power of attorney. Had a attorney draw up the papers while my parents were competent, but never went thru the transfer. Mom isn't going to a nursing home if I can help it. She gets 24x7 at home.

Let me just say I worked in 4 nursing homes, they were all horrible, neglect and abuse were rampant. Then when i was in Nursing School I was training in one a patient who was a parapelegic and could not feed her self was told by one of the aides that she ate too slow and did not have time to feed her the rest of her meal. Another spilled her coffee and the same aide said to her okay now you will sit in it. As a student I reported the aide and guess what he was not even spoken to. They need to pay the aides, nurses and other workers more in assisted health care to get quality.

I worked there when it was Lutheran Center For The Aging in 1989. All I know is that the Occupational Therapist was the most beautiful woman on the face of the Earth. I'm talking out of 1 to 10 she was a 20.

If Jeffrey Hammond was indeed Schumer's tax aide, then the integrity of the investigation will be compromised. The DOH should send an individual who will be impartial. This makes you wonder if the nursing home really has nothing to hide.

in 1999 my sister and I had to look into a nursing home for our Mother. There was no way we could care for her, she was having major seizures and had multiple brain tumors. We went to this place, then called The Lutheran Center... and it was horrible. We walked out and swore she wasn't going there. It smelled bad, the place was dark and the staff was not friendly. The care level was subquality even then. Fortunately, the one by St John's hospital (now St. Catherines') accepted her. Her care there was great and there isn't enough I can say about the staff, they were the best. Took good care of her.
