Deceptively sweet and deadly

There are 27 comments on the Berkshire Eagle story from Jun 25, 2010, titled Deceptively sweet and deadly. In it, Berkshire Eagle reports that:

Tobacco: It's not your mother's cigarettes or your father's chew any more. In fact, today's tobacco products are packaged more to look like they belong in a candy store -- and some, despite a federal flavoring law, can taste sweet too.

Funny, but the Comm. of Massachusetts makes more via taxes from each pack of cigarettes sold than tobacco companies ever do.

Well Glenn if you're going to choose to kill yourself slowly they at least want to profit off it.

Too much food, booze, illegal drugs and lack of excersise will kill one faster than tobacco.

I don't have stats to back it up but I'd say most of the people that do the things you listed smoke as well. At least from my observations over the years.

BULL CRAP I HAVE NEVER WALKED INTO A STORE TO FIND CIGGS OR ANY TOBACCO PRODUCTS NEXT TO ANY CANDY.. ALL TOBACCO PRODUCTS ARE KEPT BEHIND THE COUNTERS. I'M A SMOKER AND I RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT, BUT THEY SHOULD TAX ALCOHOL JUST A LIL MORE. MY SMOKING DOES NOT IMPAIR MY ABILITY TO DRIVE AS DOES BOOZE. I DRINK ON OCCASION MOSTLY AT HOME. BUT I SEE PEOPLE GO TO BARS AND GET TOTALLY TRASHED AND LEAVE IN THEIR CARS GET INTO ACCIDENTS RAISING THE COST OF AUTO INSURANCE RATES FOR EVERYONE AND JEOPORDIZING THE PUBLICS SAFETY THEREFOR THEY SHOULD LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR $$$$$$$.LEAVE US SMOKERS ALONE. AND AS FOR KIDS MOST OF THEM TRY ALCOHOL WAY BEFORE THEY SMOKE!!! PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT TOBACCO BOARD !!!

I quit smoking thanks to Snus, and take comfort in knowing that according to the Royal College of Physicians, Snus is 90-99% safer than smoking cigarettes. Snus has been study extensively, and has not been found to cause oral or lung cancer. In fact, 20% of Swedish males use Snus, yet Sweden has some of the lowest cancer rates in the developed world. To be honest, I'd much rather see people use a safer cigarette alternative rather than ban everything except cigarettes. From a public policy standpoint, it makes much more sense to have people switch to a much less harmful alternative to nicotine.

I suggest taking a look more on The health effects of Snus here on this excellent and informative site: http://snusauthority.com/blog/the-health-effe...

And spending too many winters in Berkshire County is not exactly good for one's mental health, either.

Put a 10 dollar tax on ALL tobacco products for personal consumption. Put them completely out of sight at the store. Tobacco still kills more people then any other cause. Except, maybe, old age.
Institute a program to have all, legal, smokers sign up for a tobacco id. Just like a drivers license. After a stated period of time allow no more applications. No id. no tobacco. Use or buy. This would greatly reduce the continued addiction of young people and gradually cause tobacco usage to disappear. At some point it would no longer pay for the tobacco companies to sell in this country. It would also give time for state and federal governments to come up with substitute taxes.

The above message brought to you by your local Marxist.
Hey 'rickf', ever hear of freedom of choice, and personal responsibility?
What is it with these Leftists that they want to regulate every body and every thing?

I think I speak for all Leftists when I say that Rush Limbaugh and his puppy dog Heller are to be pitied and not despised. Their problem is incurable and so we should not sit in judgment of them.
