I was thinking, or was it that voice in my head again? Anyway, something in my brain said "are there any famous people from Stilwell?" And then it answered "Probably not but I bet there are more than a few infamous people from around here." I confess ,I am not from here, just lived around the town for the last 30 years or so. So tell me who is famous from Stilwell and who is infamous? And what did they do to earn that recognition?

Shorty Mann....He was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association. His rodeo career began in 1934 when he was 16 at Madison Square Garden Rodeo in New York City and he later won the bull riding competition. He was bull riding champion of the old Cowboys Turtle Association (later the Professional Cowboys Rodeo Association) in 1944 and 1946. In 1947 he switched to being a clown because of numerous injuries received earlier. He retired from the professional rodeo circuit in 1959. He was awarded lifetime membership on the Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association upon his retirement.

obviously you have heard some Stilwell folklore...
but I would be very careful with info...

ole Charlie still has some family members living there in town and they are ready to pounce at any mention of ole Charlie...

I know a folklore auther (notice that I didn't say know of)that interviewed Charlie himself and has every detail documented...so yes there is a book that has been written but ole Charlie made it clear that those that preseed him don't get any profit so the book has not been to the printers yet...now you can figure out what the rest of this story is...

Yep, I remember that guy. I heard rumors that he witnessed his parents being killed and that was why he was never quite right in the head. Anybody know if that was true?

I remember that he once wrote a letter to the editor about something. All I remember was that is was well written and he had a line about how he was looking forward to the time he would ride his bike down the streets of gold in heaven. He like us was blasting the upper crust for looking down on others.

As kids we made fun of him because he was different but I did feel sorry for him after that article. Now that I'm older and wiser I realize he was just a guy trying to make the best of what life had dealt him. Sometimes life's a real bit<h.

I remember reading that same letter that edgar wrote to the editor he told about hs military service in the trenches of world war 1. I'm sure it had something to do with him being different. And of coarse I'm sure his name is not on the stilwell veterans memorial thats only reserved for uppercrust that have served

Probably not, though I have to imagine if that wall is counting on the names of upper crust to fill it then it will probably have a lot of empty space for many years to come.
