Mingus man killed
Friday, December 05, 2008

The Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting death which occurred at the Mule Lip Bar in Mingus, Texas.
A 43-year-old Mingus resident was killed due to a gunshot wound at the bar at around 2 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5. Investigators with the sheriff’s office are still interviewing witnesses and processing evidence from the crime scene.

The shooting was not intentional, the gun was brought in as a scare tactic, when Parsons started a struggle, the gun went off and shot him. It was Will Copeland, but it was after 2 a.m. and Parsons wouldn't leave the bar as asked several times.

Did the gun go off by itself ? Parsons shot himself with someone else pointing the gun at him on accident ? Sure am glad it was'nt the other way around with Kevin accidently shooting Will. They would have him already in the electric chair. Kevin funeral is Monday at 2 p.m. at Strawn.

There is no way that Will needed a scare tactic over Kevin, All that had to be done was to call the Sheriffs dept and it would have been handled properly. To begin with Will having a firearm in a bar is an automatic sentence. And taking someone else's life should be. I agree with George,if it were the other way around they would have Kevin locked up with the key thrown away....But its Will.....Justice needs to be served. What happed is wrong...Also, the bar should have had enough respect to be closed the entire weekend, but instead, they saw fit to close on Monday,so they wouldnt loose their money for the weekend....pretty sorry of the owner...

The gun went off during a struggle that Kevin started. Apparently Will just got the gun to say, "get out," and Kevin reached for it. I agree, Will shouldn't have taken the shotgun into the bar, but alcohol caused him to make a poor decision, I guess. He'll have to live with the incident the rest of his life. All I can say is I'm glad I wasn't there. I heard it was pretty gruesome, due to the shot to Kevin's head. So sad for everyone.

I don't feel there was a need to close the bar for the weekend. The owner was respectful to close on the day of funeral just as any other business would have done. It's not like it was their fault. I don't think they were even there when it happened. The owner has to make a living just like the rest of us. I really feel bad about what happened to Kevin. I would not have wished that on anyone. My prayers are with both families. They both need them.

Did Kevin's nephew close his taco stand for the entire weekend? The employees of the bar were probably thankful that they were able to work. I would think it would be hard for anyone to lose 4 days of wages. Think about them not just the owner.

Think about the employee!?!?!?! She should be fired. If the employee would have called the cops to come and make Kevin leave, then Kevin would still be alive. So think about that before you feel so sorry for the employee! The bartender did nothing but let a man walk in with a gun and STILL NOT CALL THE COPS!!!! She stood there watched it all happen and then called the owners of the bar and STILL NO ONE CALLED THE COPS!?!?!?!?! Come on people are you all seriously that ignorant? You should all be praying for the Parsons' famliy and the Copeland kids, not defending Will or trying to blame a dead man for his own death.
No one was murdered at the Taco Stand. They had more reason to stay open for having to know help pay for a funeral that never should have taken place.

I wasn't there so I don't know how it all happened. Maybe you were. I do know that there are more employees than the one there that night. I don't know if that one even worked that weekend. Would you have wanted to? I do agree with you that we need to pray for both families. I don't think anyone is blaming a dead man for his own death or I don't see it that way.

I have waited to post my thoughts until now, but I have known Will Copeland for many years and consider him to be a friend of mine, but this sounds to me to have been murder. I of course do not know all of the facts yets but If it is as I have heard it to be he needs to be prosecuted to the fullest just as any other person would be.

The Mule Lip did not do anything to harm Kevin on purpose. The bartender should resign or move on to help erase what had to be tramitic memories. Once someone dies in a place that stigma stays with it. Call it a spirit or a ghost, just an errie feeling. Copeland was a good person untill he decided to inforce the law on his own with an outlawed weapon. I agree, he should be prosecuted !!! Just like anyone else would be...

I think everyone needs to stop taking trash about Will! He didn't mean to kill anyone! Accidents happen! I can tell you this...I too used to tend bar in Mingus and Will always stayed with us girls if he was asked to make sure we were safe and got to our cars safe! He was like a "dad" to all us girls and i can assure you he didn't mean to hurt or kill Kevin for that matter. Why is it that everyone wants to throw the book at Will? Kevin was the one that wouldn't leave...I as an ex bartender in Mingus can tell you that I have several problems with Kevin and never had any out of Will...Let the law handle this and stop talking trash about Will..He's a good man and wouldn't murder anyone! I feel for both families and I am sorry for the loss of Kevin's life but just remember accidents happen. Who's to say if Kevin had had got behind the wheel and he was drunk that he wouldn't have killed an entire family...He wouldn't have meant to do that but accidents do happen! Stop judging! Let the law handle it!

The bars of Mingus are well known for violence and have been for years. Most of us just stay away from them. It's a shame too, most of the people of Palo Pinto County are fine folks. The Sheriff's Office can only do so much. They are under staffed and under paid. Really, it's up to us to stop allowing what has been going on in Mingus. Let's make Mingus a decent place for regular folks to go.
