Isn't he already head of the City Council? Stands to reason he'd be acting mayor.......

The Falls City, City Council Wednesday night voted unanimously to approve Council President John Nixon continuing to exercise the powers and duties of the office of Mayor for the unexpired term of the late Marshall Maddox. Nixon said he chose to continue in this capacity rather than assume the position of Mayor.
Nixon noted that by assuming the position of Mayor, a vacancy would be created in the third ward and he would then be off of the Council December 4th when a new Mayor is seated.
City Administrator Dick Gist explained the options for filling the vacancy for a short term.
The Council unanimously approved a resolution honoring Marshall Maddox for his years of Service to the City of Falls City, serving as both City Councilman and Mayor, and thanking his family for their support of Marshall’s efforts as a leader of our community.
Two men are seeking the Mayors job in the November general election. Hal Sutter who was second in the voting in the May primary election and Rod Vandeberg who is running after petitions with more than 300 signatures were filed on his behalf following the death of Mayor Maddox.

There was a two-page article in the Falls City Journal before the primaries that listed the platforms of the candidates in the primary election. Sutter's top three ideas would be in that article, as well as bio information. You could get a copy from the Journal (they'll know which issue, I'm sure). Vandeberg ran an ad in the paper on Friday that said he'll be communicating his ideas through the paper before the election. Or, you can ask him. Actually, if you want to know more about their views on issues that interest you, call them. Both will tell you exactly what they think, so you can make an informed decision.

Since I am a new resident to Falls City.I have asked local residents about thier opinion of the different things that have happened here in Falls City.A lot of people didn't like the building of the new water park here.It was built in the wrong area next to a main highway and next to a trucking firm. The new library that was built will not bring jobs to Falls City.Have heard the the new Wal-Mart that was built in Hiawatha was at one time going to built here in Falls City. But the powers that be turned it down.Wal-Mart would have brought some jobs here as well as some compition to the local stores.Maybe that why they turned down the chance to have Wal-Mart built here.Local residents are tired of the status quo in the way the city is being handled. They are left out of the loop as far as the local goverment is done.Residents are moving out of Falls City in alarming numbers in order to make a decent living else where. The value of thier homes has gone down while property taxes continue to rise. There are so many houses in Falls City for sale that it is a buyer's market. But who wants to buy a house where there are no jobs or future for their children.Residents want their children to grow up here and not have to move away to make a living.Moving away should be a choice and not a must.Falls City once again can be a great place to live and raise a family depending on the way the mayor's race turns out. It's up to you Falls City.

It should be open for ALL the public to see. Questions NOT given to candidates ahead of time.

The forun should be open to the public. But has I have stated in one of my post one of the candidates don't want that to happen. In fact this candidate won't take part in the forum if it is open to the public. So in the best interest of all in Fall City we may have to accept the forum not to be open to the public but we will get a chance to know the canidates a little better then you can make the right chocie.

seems the definition of forum seems to imply openness and audience particitation...

Which candidate does not want it to be public? And does that raise a red flag for anyone?

It would be the canidate that really doesn't want to face the questions that the public may ask of him.On the other hand the other candidate has always been open to the public and any questions they may have. His campaign all along has been open to the public and any questions. If a person was to do a little research it wouldn't be hard to find out the one and only canidate that doesn't want to be open to the public and wants closed door politics like it has always been in Falls City.

Well since you asked, I happen to know for a fact that Hal Sutter is very open to the public being included in this and would welcome questions and be happy to comment on your questions. Lets see, that leaves the OTHER candidate and its a known fact he's in cahoots with the present administration----sooooo does that raise a red flag???? mmmmmmm, what do you think????

If the other candidate is not open to a public forum then think about the reasons why that could be, people. Why does everyone just naturally assume that there has to be a sinister reason for everything? Hal Sutter has only lived here for two years. He doesn't have a history here, and wasn't in business here so he hasn't made any enemies by, oh I don't know, turning someone down for a loan. Ask him if he would agree to a public forum at his old place of business. The facts are, if you're the CEO of a business, you make enemies no matter what you do because there will always be people who don't agree with you. Do you think Hal would face an open forum if we shipped in 100 of his former customers/employees and said, "Go ahead, ask him any question you want?" He has nothing to lose because very few people know anything about him! There are many many good people in this town that would handle an open forum in a professional manner, but there are also people who don't like successful business people, and Vandeberg is one. A public forum means anybody can say anything he or she wants. And that includes someone who might have a personal vendetta. Both of these men are good men who have run businesses, so why don't we just listen to what they have to say when they say it and stop assuming that either one of them has evil, sinister intentions. Maybe some of you need to check out some of the other postings on this site and listen to the things people say about hard-working FC business people. Then you might understand why a business man would say no, if he indeed did, but I haven't seen any evidence of that either.

To the guy who's fascinated with WalMart. Please do some fact-checking on statistics about what happens to small towns when a WalMart moves in. The "jobs it brings to town" are just the jobs that are lost when competing businesses close down. The business people in FC have a right to be scared because WalMart closes down businesses in every town they enter. Maybe FC is far enough away that WM won't shut people down like many feared. But it sounds like, if they don't close a couple of doors, you'll be disappointed. The business people in FC have invested everything they own in this community, and have been donating to every group or organization that walks in the door for years. They deserve a little loyalty back. To my knowledge WM never wanted to open here because if they had wanted to, they would have. But if the "Powers that be" turned them down, then they were looking out for the best interests of this community rather than the best interests of WM. And if you think the FC merchants don't have any competition, then you need to pull your head out of the sand. They compete every day against Hiawatha, St. Joe and every other town with a store.

Oh, and Falls City is going to be a different place to live no matter who wins the mayor's race. The government here will be different either way.

Mr. Bill---You sure seem to know a lot about FC for someone who's new there. And I sure find it funny that you seem to know that one candidate agreed to an open forum but the other candidate didn't when the other candidate just officially announced his candidacy on Friday, and the forum question was posed that afternoon. And today's only Sunday. You sure get around for somebody who doesn't know much about the place. Hmm.
