Whats going on with the lack of law inforcement? I keep hearing about all the gas "drive offs" at fs. But have never heard of anyone getting caught (there is your fix for the high gas price, fill up then drive off, no one has got caught yet)j/k lol. I heard a week or so ago that someone robbed fs on a Sat. or Sun. while they were open, and cleaned out the cash drawer and the safe in the office. Never heard about anyone getting arrested. I've heard that people have tried to break into S&Js back door and also county cookin, before they even opened. Why hasn't anyone got caught? What ever happened with the break in at R&D, never heard of anyone getting arrested on that one either. No wonder all the criminals move to Humboldt!!! We are like sitting ducks for them. Just wait with the economy the way it is, just a matter of time before they start breakin into homes!!! And don't the city pay Richardson County "X" amount of money for "police protection"??? Sounds like another waste of tax money to me!! I'm sure there are other things that happen too, these are just things that come to mind.

Now I hear this morning that a whole bunch of cars got broken into last ninght. Why doesn't that surprise me? And I even heard the officer that was to be in Humboldt was over in Pawnee at CJ foods. WOW! Hard to watch over Humboldt when your at Pawnee. Don't know many details, but this is getting out of hand folks!!! I wasn't too far off, they broke into cars. Mark my word HOMES and businesses will be next!! Is everyone in this town ready for that to happen?? What can be done to stop the madness??

So what part of town were these cars broken into? Did they get anything?

All over town, I've heard of 5 or 6 now. Some of the ones i've heard of are @ 1st nemaha, 4th between nemaha and central, 10th and central, 9th between central and long branch, 6th or 7th Lincoln. Those are the ones i've heard of, might be more than that. Heard of one other one that they didn't get anything out of the car but someone had been in the car but didn't steal anything so it sounded like there was nothing to turn in. The others had all kinds of "stuff" stolen, money, cds, purses ect. Hard to tell how many others or what else they got into. Might be a few days before some people realize things are missing.

I hear ya. Why would they be in town Sun. morning but not on a Fri. night? Seems a$$ backwards to me. I understand your point, about them giving parking tickets, about all they can handle!! I don't mean to nit pick but those folks at that church have more parking lots than any other place in Humboldt. I don't agree with the parking on the 4 lane. Thats a whole other topic. But I do get your point. The Sheriff Office is a JOKE!!!! Why does the city pay them clowns?? Any one else doing such a poor job in any other line of work would be FIRED!!

Who needs Cops when you have Jack Copper. All Jack would have to do is look at these criminals and their heads would explode. Jack's tears cure cancer.

LOL That might work for some of his family's shinnanigans but, otherwise, he's probably too busy getting his ad ready telling everyone to "shop in Humboldt" so businesses can pay for their ads in his paper. This is while he's on his way out of town to shop, of course.
As for investigations of vandalism and robberies in Humboldt, from what I hear, the cops try to investigate the victims. Last Fall when a robbery was reported, it was pretty well known who the culprits were since they were heard bragging about it. Yet, the cops chose to close the case and make things even worse by accusing the victims. The City should not accept this type of behavior if they are at all interested in saving the few businesses that ARE left to struggle in Humboldt. Communication and cooperation are needed on some of the problems facing Humboldt. Turning a blind eye is not the answer. Larger areas have tried "citizen patrols". I can't say how effective these are but it might be something that could help when all else fails. Decent people have got to pull together in Humboldt and help each other out. If they want decent people to want to make Humboldt their home, if they want gas stations, grocery stores and places to eat, they have to step up to the plate and MAKE Humboldt their home and support Humboldt. Otherwise, it really isn't helping to allow some of the things that have been going on and simply put everyone down on their way out of town. Come on people, think about what you want your little town to be and try to be a part of making it happen. Please?

Around, you really hit a home run on that one. Most common sense post I've read. I like the "citezen patrol" idea, how do we make it work?? The hours of criminal activity are not very good hours to get people to "volunteer". Maybe we need to just have the cops "on duty" and in Humboldt during those hours!! Best I can tell they are in town from Aprox. 8pm to midnight(sometimes). And "in town" means at the Humboldt office on the computer "doing paper work"(yeah right) most of the time. Last I knew for sure they are "OFF Duty" @ 2am. Don't take long for the criminals to figure that out either. Maybe they could change there hours and work till 5 or 6am. If the city is paying for services from the sheriff office, which is BS! But they do, so, paying for a service, they should have the final say on what time they recieve said services. All the city has to do is tell the sheriff they want "protection" from 10pm to 5 or 6am. May not fix the problem, but it couldn't hurt. Last I knew a sheriffs office was a 24/7 365 job. Any other ideas??

Excellent information, Donut. That's a good starting place. Hopefully, if enough people are willing to make an effort, maybe they can get the City to listen.

I agree. Everyone in town needs to be aware of what is going on in their neighborhood. These types of crimes usually happen between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. If you are up taking care of things, look out your windows to see if anyone is walking around or you see a strange car. If you see something out of the ordinary, call the RCSD. At least if the criminals know you will report them maybe they will go to another town. I also agree that it would be nice if we could have patrols during these hours. Maybe not every night but here and there. That way they wouldn't know when they would be in town. Just a thought.

The lack of law enforcement in Humboldt is nothing new. Our law enforcement here has always been kind of crappy. One reason for that is that our county can't afford to pay for "good" law enforcement. One of the former cops told me he left to go to another county to work because the wages are pretty low. That's why we generally get stuck with "rookie" cops right out of the academy that they think they know everything. It won't change. And in the defense of the sheriffs department, our city only pays for 40 hours a week of enforcement.

The fact that Humboldt has to pay at all is just plain dumb. Everyone of us already pay taxes to Richards county for this service. Humboldt is in Richardson County, there for, the Sheriff's Office HAS to "protect" us, we are in their jurisdiction. Just like every town in Richardson County. Humboldt is the only town that I know of that pays Richardson County!!! Why is that?? "rookie" or not...I DON'T see 40 hours being spent in Humboldt. I'm sure they have some lame excuse about paper work on Humboldt cases being logged as time towards the 40 hours. BS!! I would think that 40 hours should be ALL "potrol time". Another point here, we "pay" for 40 hours, is that all we get not a minute more? They should have atleast 40 hours and much more, they should be in Humboldt some amount of time just because it is in Richardson County!! 40 hours is 40 hours, why can't they cange the time to 10pm to 6am. That is 8 hours, 5 days a week. I would hope to shout that 3 nights on the weekend could fall in that catagory and then a couple other nights of the week could be mixed up so it is different every week. Keep the criminals gussing!!! The sheriffs office is up to what 7 or 8 now? I don't know for sure, I've lost track. Where does all there time go? Falls City has it's own police department, they shouldn't need to do much at all down there. Stella, Shubert, Verdon, Dawson, Salem, Rulo, Barada NONE of them pay Richardson County, why would they be there? It sounds like they only come to town if you "pay" them. This is something that we, as a town just can NOT put up with. Like I've said before, just a matter of time before they start breaking into houses! And you better hope like all get out that they don't have 39 hours logged for Humboldt when you call to report your house robbery!!!!!!

This City Council have balls.... surely you jest. It seems like each Council gets a little worse. We're more concerned with smoking bans and cracking down on businesses that violate it than to take care of any real crime.

Haven't heard much the last couple days. I did hear they have 3 people, either suspects or in jail, not sure which, depends on who you talk too. You know how Humboldt rumors are!! I did see super Jack throw RCSO a jab in the Humboldt "wipe". Thought that was a bit out of the norm for Jack. But,it's his paper I guess he can do that. One of the few times that I would have to agree with him. Maybe his comments in the "wipe" will get someone worked up over it. As usual he had the details wrong, but that's normal. He said that it was gas being stolen, I never heard of that, all I heard about was personal property. It would sure be nice if they did get someone for it, but I just don't know if they have for sure. Maybe someone else has all the "low down".
