Plans for a Homeless Shelter

Full story: NBC29 Charlottesville

On a freezing night hundreds of homeless people compete for warm beds in just three shelters in Charlottesville, Staunton and Harrisonburg.

So there are only three shelters in Charlottesville, Staunton and Harrisonburg? What about the Moore Center on East Market Street? The huge Salvation Army here that is the only Salvation Army in the area that serves three meals a day instead of just one like the others do---since the facility houses children. What are the myriad of facilities and halfway houses that dot the entire city and belong to Region Ten? What about all the churches in PACEM that provide housing? I think our reporters are either being disingenuous or, perhaps, there is yet another giveaway agenda here. Crusading liberals just love to see their names in lights, no matter how much it costs the rest of us.

Why not compare the way animals are treated in this county with how the homeless are treated? Do the homeless have a facility half as decent as the Albemarle Co. SPCA? NOT! This is the most selfish place I have ever lived.

With this economy it seems as if people want to do more but can't seem to make their dollars stretch as far as they want them to.

Thats because the Animals at the SPCA are appreciative and aren't getting shit faced with the donations that are givin to them. If you think this town is selfish when it comes to homeless, your crazy. This is the mecca for homeless. They must send postcards to the other homeless around the country and tell them to hop on the next train and catch a ride to Charlottesville.

Give me a break!

There is a difference between homeless and bum. Unfortunate, Charlottesville coddles bums as vigorously as they do homeless.

Randy---Every time I go anywhere near the downtown mall a lot of homeless men try to bum money from me. So the difference is...?

I assume that was meant for me.

This is my opinion only:

Homeless is hopefully a temporary condition usually bought on by outside circumstances.

A bum is someone that, through decisions, actions and lack of action has reduced themselves to one of the lowest life forms in society and has no aspiration of doing any better for themselves.

I have been "homeless" by choice, living a summer in the area of the coal tower in the mid nineties. The people I associated with usually worked odd jobs and scrounged for things they needed, taking pride in themselves, unlike the "bums".

If a person wants to live in the weeds and be "Grizzly Adams" I say great. When they beg money from others to enable their bohemian lifestyle they become---as the Russians call them--social parasites. These we have hundreds of since our city council loves to give them the "keys to the city." Charlottesville is the most beggar/bum/vagrant friendly city in Virginia and possibly the east coast. The myriad programs this tiny town funds is actually conducive to people not seeking employment---and they don't.

yep, and those I call bums. But the guy who lost everything in the dot-com bust and is living out of the back of his SUV until he gets back on his feet is Homeless.

well Rusty, I think that technically a person who has an SUV to sleep in is not homeless. Right now the Salvation Army has rooms for those who can stay sober and off drugs while they earn enough for the deposit on an apartment. No one has any excuse to cry in this town as long as they are willing to work because we have an incredible number of programs to help anyone. There are hundreds of jobs around here that do not require a dot com background. They probably are the type of job a man would want to do for the rest of his life but they will get him headed in the right direction. The people of today would not last a week in the Great Depression of the 30's that tempered the spirit of the generation that won World War 2. Today's poorest have it a hundred times better than those who were children on the thirties. Nobody in this town has any complaints---hot food, showers, clothes, shelter, is there for the asking. Salvation Army, Moore House, all the churches that belong to PACEM, a Region Ten network that probably has two dozen buildings quietly hidden around Cville and the County, Cville has a social services department that may have as many personnel and volunteers as police in the police department, no, no dice, no pity from me, anybody living in their vehicle either wants it that way, or doesn't want someone to find them. The crowd I saw begging in front of CVS early this morning were chortling about the warm place they all stayed in last night---so the guy in the SUV gets no pity from me.

DD-214 Discharge Papers and Separation Documents

When the bum says he is a veteran that is down on his luck and asks you for money on the downtown mall, ask to see his DD-214. This should cut down on the faking a little bit, even though some bums are nervy enough to forge a federal document; which you, of course, should report to the FBI if you suspect such fraud!

And if a dot com millionaire down on his luck tries to beg money---he is, by definition, a bum.......

When you go to the downtown mall take at least two friends with you. They will be able to corroborate your courtroom testimony if need be. The bum factor gets worse every year and our little treasures, the "utes at risk" that like to travel in groups and taunt shoppers, seem to be getting better drugs daily, judging by their behavior.

Charlottesville needs stiffer penalties for the panhandling and repeat drunk in public offenders. It's ridiculous. This city needs to grow a set.

did anyone actually watch this story? It touched my heart seeing a bed under the bridge in Wyanesboro. This is NOT a story about Charlottesville this is about a need in Waynesboro a need that has gone unoticed and frankly to think of someone sleeping under that bridge in the cold is heartwrenching I know a lot of people that are one paycheck away from being on the streets To Citizen I say the story is not about your town or your experiences with homeless. It is about a need in waynesboro and a growing problem with people losing jobs and tougher times.

Well then CONCERNED--

You can show us THE WAY by hosting several of these people in your own home; which is also what the Charlottesville City Council should do. Beats spending our local revenue and luring yet more layabouts into ALL OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA! I realize that ALL OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA has the same problem---bums who hitch hike here from all over the nation to take advantage of the fine programs that encompass the six or so counties that comprise the UVA Hospital and Region 10 district. Oh yes, I DO INDEED know the story that goes beyond the narrow slice presented in this article. This problem was in place WELL BEFORE the recent economic setback

This area has had people sleeping under the bridges for many years and the ones I've seen are drunks, career drunks, not some guy who rcently lost a job. I say yet again for any hand wringer who didn't read my previous entry---between the churches of PACEM, Region 10 shelters and facilities, the huge Salvation Army complex, Moore House and other volunteer groups there are hundreds of beds available THROUGHOUT Central Virginia. This media stuff is disingenuous---especially the clips that show "oh woe is me" under the bridge. Show me the guy's arrest record before you get my cries of sympathy please. There WILL ALWAYS be people under bridges in Waynesboro, Staunton and Charlottesville because the shelters have finally learned NOT TO ADMIT DRUNKS THAT WILL TEAR THE PLACE APART!
