It blows my mind that a full time fire fighter gets paid $50,000 a year and we have Deputies that make $30,000 -$34,000 a year. I see a major problem here!

I agree. A deputy sheriff in Augusta has a starting salary of $30,000. THATS IT!!!!! I know of veteran officers there that are barely making $40,000. Take a look at the calls and dangers the deputies are faced with EVERY DAY.

Police officers also are not required to have a 2 year degree and firefighter 1 & 2 training. It's no different than how doctors make more than nurses. The doctor has more schooling and a higher degree. To be a cop all you need is a GED in most places. So, it makes complete sense to me.

I can tell you now that they do not make nearly $50,000, but training, Ce's, and Equipment cost a lot of money. and those tools they are spending money on are invaluable and they keep the men and women who respond to those calls safe and the main goal is that EVERYONE goes home and if the cost of that knowledge and equipment costs $18,00/year per Firefighter. I think it is worth it/. Augusta county is one of the lower paid departments in the state. My husband was paid for the county for 4 years and has held other department jobs throughout his career and i volunteer and think that if you want to complain about the way things are done in the fire service that you should go to your local agency and VOLUNTEER. put your life on the line and buck up!

It blows MY mind that you think a firefighter makes $50,000 a year. Guess what, your firefighters make $30-34,000 a year too. THAT'S IT!!!! When they say it costs $150,000 a year for 3 people, that includes equipment and training. Do some research before you run your mouth off so you won't appear so clueless next time. PS, take a look at the calls and dangers your firefighters are faced with EVERY DAY too. Show respect to your first responders, both blue and red.

here is what i think, if you dont want to make $34,000 dollars a year then dont work as a police officer or a fire fighter. these people choose to do that work so they choose to be paid what they are paid.

I guess we should scrap the minimum wage, because if people will work for $3 an hour, that's their choice?

all public servants choose to do what they do because they enjoy it and like helping others. it is a shame that the community does not choose to pay them more, instead they complain when they don't understand what is going on and why their taxes are going up or when a company goes to doing revenue recovery. it is a business but someone has got to do it. in a perfect world all communities would be able to be fully staffed 24/7, but reality is that it costs too much. everyone pays for insurance and never complains, fire/rescue and police are a community's insurance plan, pay them and be thankful that someone wants to wake up at 2am and take care of the sick people, accidents, fires and miscreants.

My opinion is that everyone who speaks out about companies should be sent a packet that includes and application to the department, a course syllabus for Firefighter 1&2, EVOC I,II,III , EMT-B, and HAZMAT OPS, and a pager. PROBLEM SOLVED. if you have time to complain you have time to volunteer and be the best part of someone's worst day.

The majority in the room were the volunteers of the Churchville station.

What I don't understand is if the public community is so worried about the response times, why don't each and every one of the people at the debate sign up for the volunteer department??? I run volunteer in the central portion of Virginia, and we get $0 that a BIG ZERO dollars to take time out of our lives to help the community. So before anyone ever wants to complain about a volunteer fire/rescue organization... Why doesn't their sorry but join if it's so bad?

RA Cinader! Ha!

Your posts are always hilarious but I must ask one question.
Is your name "liberal ace" or is it "liberALace" as in Liberace?

I suspect the latter as it is the more humorous of the two and lending to the misconception and misreading.

Keep up the good work.

I love the laughs.

I live in Stuarts Draft, in a nice little community and I feel very lucky to have a great Fire dept. & Rescue dept here. I already have to pay a lot of money each year in taxes( cars, truck and SUV and then property taxs, will over $3900.00 a year. I for one, understand that my tax dollars are used to pay for the schools and public sewer and water. But with all this staffing at these out in the country fire and rescue is going to make the BOS, say we need more money for all these new people on the county pay roll. I pay enough!! Then it is my understanding that since the county got greedy and said it was going to start charging for the first aid calls, that donation have almost stopped. We use to give a few hundred dollars each year, but now I will pay if I use them. And since I only go to UVA for my medical stuff, I for see not every using the First aid again.
