Why can't we get any house hold jobs in Metter? Whats the hold up here? It's a great place to live, but the residents of Metter can't keep Bailing out the county. We need some business here. Any takers?

There is no doubt we need more head of household jobs here in town. But, there is a bigger picture people here don't always see. In addition to looking into services a town has ie, telephone company, medical care, housing, power companies, etc., Employers look at how well schools perform, how well their town or "downtown" is supported by the residents, the likeliness they will be able to pull the majority of their employees from that town and stability - how long their employees will remain working for them. The majority of this can not be blamed on the government or structure of our City. We need to look to ourselves. The more people shop and spend their money in town, the more our town will thrive. Why would another grocery store even consider moving to Metter when at least half the citizens don't shop here? If a grocery store company saw that the majority of the town shopped at here, they'd be more likely to consider opening a store here but since the expense is so great to open a new store, the stakes would be too high.
The best thing for citizens to do is get involved with the local community. The City and the County each have volunteer committee members. Call each of them and see how you can get involved. You (not specifically) will get more information on how "things" work and be able to help the community recruit more industry. It can't be the position of just one or two people.
Good Luck.

Like any small town in that area, Metter, Stillmore and Twin City, there is no progression. I'm from Stillmore and left there in 1987. When I visit back home it still looks the same, as a matter of fact worse. There are no industries around to keep younger generations there. They are moving to metropolitian areas like Atlannta and even out of state in which I did. I now live in Texas after many years living around the world. My advice is to grow and prosper!

Metter will never grow as long as the local property owners continue to charge high dollar rent for business property that will not turn the renters a profit. Nor will they rent to anyone that will compete with their business. The city of Metter has added ordinances that are ridiculous in my opinion, such as having to purchase a permit for a fence on your own property or purchase a permit to hang a sign on you business. Local merchants have to jack prices up so high to cover the overhead and local fees that people have to go out of town to shop. The business owners need to keep the rent down, pay for the repairs themselves and the city hall needs to fire this new city manager that thinks this is Atlanta.

i would love to shop in metter, but i can't afford metter. i go to register once a week just to buy gas. i can save anywhere from 20 to 25 cents on a gallon so it's worth it on a fill-up. i can buy groceries at bi lo in statesboro cheaper than i can in metter. the same item will cost less in statesboro than it does in metter. clothing? forget it! compare peeples with jc penny in statesboro sometime. metter is a slowly dying town and nothing is gonna change until some of the old money people release their strangle hod on our town.

YES I AM ANOTHER ONE THAT RECENTLY MOVED TO METTER AND I DO THINK IT'S A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE. DO I THINK IT'S PERFECT? OF COURSE NOT. EVERY PLACE WILL HAVE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ASPECTS. DO I WANT TO CHANGE METTER? NO. I LIKE THE WAY IT IS.HOWEVER, SOMETIMES THE NEEDS OF A COMMUNITY DO CHANGE AND THEREFORE REQUIRE SOME AMENDMENTS. THE WHOLE COUNTRY NEEDS CHANGES BECAUSE NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE RIGHT NOW, THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT OF WORK AND PRICES SO HIGH FOR EVERYTHING THAT IT HURTS ALL OF US IN THE LONGRUN. IT DOES HIT SOME PEOPLE SUBSTANTIALLY MORE. THE MONEY THAT THESE POLITICIANS ARE BLOWING TO GET ELECTED IS JUST UNREAL. IF THEY TOOK THAT $$$ AND DID SOMETHING FOR THE PEOPLE WE MIGHT VOTE FOR THEM AND YES IT IS HARD TO FIND A JOB HERE AS I HAVENT FOUND ONE YET EITHER, PROBABLY BECAUSE I AM NOT "A LOCAL" EVEN THOUGH I AM A RESIDENT AND DO PAY TAXES HERE.

MY ADVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF METTER, WHO KEEP TRY TO MAKING PEOPLE, FORTUNATE ENOUGH NOT TO HAVE BEEN BORN HERE, FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE NO SAY WOULD BE TO JUMP UP TO 2008 AND BECOME PART OF THE NEW WORLD, WHERE PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT OTHER PLACES AND OTHER PEOPLE. MAYBE THAT IS WHY METTER CANNOT PROSPER. I HAPPEN TO LIKE WHERE I LIVE IN METTER, BUT I AM THRILLED I WAS NOT BORN HERE. THANKFULLY THERE ARE ENOUGH PEOPLE WHO WERE BORN HERE THAT HAVE ACTUALLY VENTURED ACROSS, NOT ONLY THE COUNTY LINE, BUT INTERNATIONALLY AS WELL. I LIKE THOSE PEOPLE, THEY ARE ENLIGHTENED, AND CAN TALK ABOUT MORE THAN THE GOOD OLD DAYS.

Hopefully one day I can move back to that region and spread my knowledge of this country and other countries. Throughout my travels, I feel that small town America is dying out. Small towns have to grow to compete in the global economy or else they will not exist.

metter is full of crackheads, cokeheads and the police do nothing about it!that is sad, metter is a nice small town but we have a bad drug problem if we would all stand up as the people of metter and not just blame the drug dealers but also put the blame of the users, the courts should lock them up not just a slap on the wrist probation.we need a bigger jail,i'm just sick of our small town going to shit with these nasty crackhoes that do anything just for a fix.we also on the other hand have a great place but i wish the police would be out more at night all day and night expecially on the week ends.we need a change or reality check.......

I am about to move to Metter from Atlanta and I have to say I find its small town charm alluring. I understand why people who have grown up there might feel that its charm has worn off, but I think that just means that it's time for you to leave and experience the world and live in a big city like Atlanta and I guarantee you'll love it, but you'll be able to appreciate Metter for what it is and stop complaining about what it's not because every town has its problems.

Soon u will have to speak Spanish to survive in Metter. Talk about jobs, when they do come to the Metter area Jose will be there to take them for pasos. Don't think so look around you in downtown. It's becoming lke a third world country around here over the past several years.
Our local law enforcement should direct these folk back toward the border but the farmers & cheap employers here would then have to give jobs back to real American citizens.

Oh that's right, sorry, the illegals' are only doing the jobs no one else in the community wants, right?

Construction,distribution warehousing,trucking,landclear ing,equipment operating,land scaping,logging,farming,manufa cturing,etc.

Funny, I also don't remember Mexican gangs while growing up in this area. Wake up citizens we are being invaded in South Georgia!!!!!!

These illigal aliens will milk our county social services dry... Taxpayers subsidize the cheap labor force for the big employers to prosper.

Homeboy your exactly right, I don't understand why our local law enforcement doesn't take the bull by the horns and enforce the damn law. These people are here illegal. I am sick of hearing they are not hurting anything by only seeking work. They are destroying our county. No more excuses. The employers are breaking the law as you say by hiring them and also should be prosecuted in this matter under the law.

The fact is everyone is going to find fault with anyplace they live. I just know, I love my town...and the people in it. Everywhere you go...you will always find people that are crappy but you will also find those ones that will give the shirt off their backs to help their neighbors....That is Metter! Everyone is always in eachothers business but if you or your family ever has a need (real problem)..you will find someone that will step in to help...just like my church! That is why I will always love my small town life! Ps- Nowhere is perfect, except for Heaven.

The problem with Metter is that we think we are Savannah or Atlanta. We have no police force or county force. We don't have any industry and farming doesn't really pay the bills like it used to. Our education sucks and half the town is on welfare who shouldn't be on welfare because they are to sorry to work and figured out the goverment will take care of them as long as they keep having babies. and Pernal franklin
