The teachers are right. The American populace has an anti-intellectual culture going on unlike other Western cultures. It may be jealousy of people with college degrees and the income and benefit differences that this entails. The current culture of instant gratification plays into this as well. Poverty rates for American children are as high as 25% now, and with more and more cuts to the middle classes, this rate will rise quickly. Children also have vast differences in their areas of strengths, which are not being recognized and utilized. We should be educating the whole child and not treating them like they're assembly line widgets who must pass one narrow set of post production tests. We must acknowledge the full range of intelligences and value all of them. We are not producing robots.
