Who was the moron that wrote up the contract in the first place. Maybe he should be given up for research and then see how he feels about it.

If you want to know about class B dealers type it in to your search engine. You will get an ear full. Jim with R&R has been sited on more then one occassion where his facility was below minimum standard for care. Min. standard is very low!!!!
Shame on Montcalm County!!!!

Sad story, but there would be no story if people would spay/neuter their pets.
Also, people need to stop getting pets
if they can't commit to keeping them.
Dogs and cats end up in these shelters
because of irresponsible owners who do not care about their fate.

What garbage Montcalm County is to allow this.
A proper Director can, with work, organize spay and nueter clinic at discounted prices to reduce unwanted litters. He can also organize special adopt-a-thons on weekend and after hours for people who work the 9-5 shifts. Mason County did this and has significately improved the facilities, animal adoptions has incresed, public relations has improved, and most importantly the killing of innocent animals has decreased.

I can't believe that the County is sending these poor helpless souls to be tortured for the sake of research. This really turns my stomach. Something needs to be done to nullify that contract. To say that this is a sad story is a complete understatement. Completely heartbreaking to know that pets will be tortured because of the heartlessness of those who are supposed to be protecting them.

The idea that there is another year to go on R&R's contract aand "then they will go from there" is sickening. I wonder how many animals will be killed or sent to research facilities in that year!

There are only 5 counties in the State of Michigan still selling shelter animals to a Class B Dealer. Will the Good Old Boy mentality lead Montcalm County to be the Last One Standing? Stay tuned. Contract with R&R is up January 31, 2009.

Almost 12 years ago my wonderful dog, Ben, was rescued from Montcolm Co. Animal shelter by a couple who paid $25 for him and his mother and brought them to the Kent Co. Humane Society for adoption. These angels went weekly and out of their own pocket did their best to rescue any dogs they could afford to purchase. I agree with other postings that there are many ways to care for pets that need homes, and research is awful as is killing them. It should be illegal. The Commission needs to appoint a temporary director and get a lawyer and start dealing with this NOW! Come on citizens, put the pressure on your leaders to not let this wait! If they worked a day at that shelter they would move on this today.

Not only are animals sold to research, the wondrous R and R research kills the animals they do not want in barrels, a barbaric and horrible way to end a life on a companion animal.
The rest off to the research lab they go. Much money is made for R & R Research, maybe they are sharing the wealth with someone?( there is no record of this..but why ?) Why else would Montcalm Animal Control not want volunteers or their "Adoptable" animals on sites such as the free www.petfinder.com ?

They are so happy that R&R "Takes care of their dead animals" that they are willing to allow adoptable pets to be stuffed into barrels ?
Something isn't right, the Commission said there was nothing "illegal" about R &R Research, true enough but that does not make it ethical in this day and age.
Montcalm needs to stand together like they did in Muskegon County, who has an "all kill" animal shelter (Vector Control-they adopt nothing out) and Life Line for Pound Buddies a group of all volunteers formed to do adoptions and care of pound animals.( www.poundbuddies.petfinder.com ). It is possible, but people must stand together and make a difference. Spay and neuter is a huge part of the answer, shelters are full, spay and neuter is a huge expense to many people, it should not be a luxury to have a spayed or neutered pet.

Montcalm County needs to step into the here and now, barrels of dead animals and research selling of companion animals is barbaric.

Here is an interesting aricle with some real numbers of how many animals have shuffled through Montcalm County 2004-2007

The commissioners are a bunch of "good old boys" who obviously don't care about animals - just the $$ they get from selling them for research.$200 for a dog and $400 for a pregnant bitch. This is sickening!! Susan33 has the right idea. Volunteers would be available on weekends for adoptathons and for prepping the animals for the event. I would love to help on weekends to see these animals get a good home. We just placed one of our fosters in a wonderful home and are thrilled he has found a lifetime of love. Let's get rid of these commissioners and elect people who care about the conditions in Montcalm County overall.

Volunteers are ready and willing to step up, but are constantly running into brick walls in the forms of policy changes and poor decisions made by the shelter staff.

No where in the article did they discuss the mother dog just last week that was seperated from her three 4-5 week old puppies and taken by R&R, on the DAY she was available for adoption-AFTER rescue groups in the area expressed their want to adopt her and her pups.

Or the fact that the director of R&R came to the meeting with paperwork from the shelter. I'd sure like to see his FOIA. How is it possible he's able to get his hands on shelter information, when the public was locked out of the shelter yesterday, and has to obtain a FOIA when they have any questions in regards to what happened to a certain dog (ie: the mother dog last week).

There are a lot of fishy things happening at the shelter right now. And the good ole boy system appears to be firmly in place. I can only hope the commissioners do the right thing and hire the candidate with the most experience, best work ethic and greatest compassion. And especially someone NOT currently associated with the shelter in its current form.

Those of you outraged by this need to continue to contact commissioners, make your voices heard. It's going to take a lot of noise to get the necessary changes made, and we need to prove to our commissioners that the good ole boy system is no longer acceptable in Montcalm County.

I agree Ms. Angie! We need to hire someone without ties to the county. Someone who will step in and make a difference.

I'm going to be a Pollyanna and try to believe that the commissioners are listenting. If you're in Montcalm County, get involved!! Write letters to your commissioners, visit the shelter! It's everyday people who are going to make a difference.

I'm wondering, did the mother dog get brought back to the shelter??

R&R came to the commissioners meeting armed with information regarding some incomplete spay/neuter agreements from a rescue group AND info that a dog with a microchip escaped from it's foster family. He was blowing a smoke screen in front of the fact that he snatches the most adoptable dogs from the shelter before they have a chance of adoption and that 94% of the counties in our state do not condone the dealings of Class B Dealers. You are sinking fast R&R and your pathetic attempts at trying to make rescue groups look bad backfired. R&R is a business and it is all about the money. Get a real job!

This just can't be happening in 2008. How could anyone supply a helpless, totally dependent, unconditional loving domestic creature to so-called research facilities that are actually sadistic criminals getting kicks out of torture? Research done on dogs or cats has never been proven beneficial to humans. Dogs and cats have been proven beneficial to humans with their love and companionship. If the county didn't murder the animals they capture, they wouldn’t have to worry about disposing of their bodies, thus wouldn't have to "abide" to a contract that is outrageous to start with. Who is making the money off of this? All commissioners that allow this to continue should be fired and fined. Whoever is still allowing the county to "sell" the pets they are so called "helping" should be prosecuted or better yet, sold for research. Also, someone had better look deeper into their personal life because they are probably selling their own children as well. Please, someone tell me how to help stop this and any other county that is also doing this. This can not continue.

WELL, I DON'T FEEL WE ACCOMPOLISHED MUCH AT THE MEETING.(IT WAS A GOOD TURN OUT). I'M NOT SURE DEE MORRISON UNDERSTANDS THAT " R & R RESEARCH " IS THE ONE THAT KILLS THE DOGS AND CATS AT THE SHELTER. THEN HE REMOVES THEM. ALSO HE HAS TOP PICK AT WHAT EVER ANIMALS HE LIKES-DOGS PUPPIES, CATS AND KITTENS. BUT THAT ISN'T THE POINT. HE IS STILL THE ONE TAKING THE ANIMALS KILLING, AND/OR SELLING THEM TO RESEARCH AND DOING WHATEVER HE LIKES WITH THEM. SAD VERY SAD! MAY GOD FORGIVE HIM AND US FOR LETTING HIM GET AWAY WITH IT!
