DOUGLASS TOWNSHIP -- A man, his wife and stepson were found dead in their Montcalm County home.

Deputies began investigating Oliver Braman, 46, on August 3 after reports stated he was using an electronic cattle prod to discipline his two teenage sons. Braman was then arrested on September 4 and later pleaded guilty to the child abuse charges.

He didn't appear at the probation office for a pre-sentence meeting, so deputies arrived Tuesday afternoon at Braman's home in the 1300 block of N. Nevins Rd. in Douglass Township to investigate.

When they arrived, there was no answer at the door, so police called a relative who came to the home. They found a pickup truck parked behind the house with its engine on and a makeshift hose connected to the outside dryer vent.

Braman, his 43-year-old wife Nancy Kaczor-Braman, and his 9-year-old stepson Nicholas Braman were then found dead inside a bedroom apparently overcome by exhaust fumes.

Deputies also found what appears to be a detailed handwritten note that stated the events began Sunday evening with the victims taking a large amount of Tylenol PM before laying down on the bed.

An autopsy will be conducted Wednesday

Did you or your son see the evidence of abuse too?

This is a tragedy, for sure.

What a sad story, and how terrible that the man and his wife were so selfish that they would also take the life of a precious 9 year old boy.

I just can't believe with the accusations regarding the cattle prod, that DHA/FIA (whatever it's called nowadays) left the 9 year old with the parents. Perhaps he was a "gentle soul" as he was described in the article, but anyone that could use a cattle prod on their kids obviously isn't 100% right in the head.

My thoughts and prayers go out to every family member and friend that is dealing with this terrible tragedy. I hope they can find closure and peace.

There is no such thing as a group suicide when it involves a 9 year old child.

It is a murder-suicide no matter which direction you spin it. Both the mother and father are monsters in my eyes. Kill yourself, fine, but not the child.

They updated the story right after my post with "murder-suicide" in the title.

It is still very sad how this child was allowed to live with the step-father after the allegations involving his older sons. Another child slips through the CPS cracks due to poor budget and staffing.

Interesting article from the Daily News:

Mother was seeking custody of 9-year-old

Luke Stier
Staff Writer

SAGINAW - The mother of Oliver Braman's three children had been trying to get custody of 9-year-old Nicholas Braman prior to his death.

"I haven't seen Nicholas in more than two years," Becki Jasinski of Saginaw said today. "Friend of the Court refused me visitation."

Jasinski was in Stanton on Friday attempting to obtain custody of her son. On Aug. 2 she received custody of her 14- and 15-year-old sons. They now live with Jasinski in her Saginaw home.

It was those two sons who in August who were involved in child abuse charges against Oliver Braman.

"I've been trying to get Nicholas out of the house ever since," Jasinski said. "The (Montcalm County) prosecutor's office was trying as well."

Oliver Braman pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree child abuse Sept. 24 but failed to appear for his presentence hearing Monday.

Jasinski said she first realized something was amiss when she received a call from Central Montcalm Upper Elementary school informing her that her son had not been in school Monday or Tuesday.

"I was contacted by the school that he had missed two days," Jasinski said. "When I then found out (Oliver) missed his meeting Monday, I had hoped they had run away or something."

"This could have been avoided had Friend of the Court stepped in," she said. "I was trying to protect my children from their abusive father but nobody in Child Protective Services would listen."

I too have dealt with the F.O.C. in Stanton. A.s.s.h.o.l.e.s.... If it doesn't benefit them they don't move very fast. Seems like you have to give them your left arm for them to even listen to you. Sounds like a law suit to me. My heart hurts for this momma.
me too, it's all about our fine elected officials, first thing we need to get rid of our present FOC, I have seen Mr. Basom, threaten to throw a mother in jail for contempt, while she was able to provide PROOF that her ex was unfit and her son was not being taken care of while in the father's custody. The boy was 4 and the father was sleeping from the time the boy woke up in the morning until 3 in the afternoon. I do not care for many of our officials in Stanton that is for sure.

Yeah....She didn't want to comply with a visitation order for fear her children would be subject to abuse, so she lost custody.

Tell her how you feel for her and her family for having to bury this 9 year old. Or Shut the F00K up.

If you are so perfect to assume and judge others, that's great. But your talents are being wasted here. jackazz
