If the police come to your house looking for a specific item can they come into your home without your permission if they don't have a warrant?
It depends, was that item you? Was the item within view? Do you own or pay the rent on the roof you are standing under because the owner/renter can give permission. Did they have a court order?

If it's your house, they cannot. In fact, if they are to obtain a warrant it must be for something specific. However, like Gabby said, if you open the door and whatever they are looking for is in plain view, they do not need a warrant.
