What is compulsory is DNA, and the studies about the genetic composition of european populations dont lie. Believe it or not, the Alps were a strong genetic barrier that prevented the mixture of italians with other central-european populations, the same way the Gibraltar strait has always been aother stron genetic barrier. There are a lot of studies about this, but of course you never read any of them!.

So, sorry to say chap, but italians are as nordic as we norwegians are mediterranian, that is ZERO, NULL, NOTHING!.Read the genetic studies: Only northern italians are more similar to spaniards from a genetic point of view. Central and of course southern italians have a huge neolithic and near eastern genetic influence, like Greece. In fact southern Italy was called Magna Grecia, because it was extensively populated by greeks since many centuries.

It's been posting a lot of times that Italy did not exist in the middle age but if we want be more precise i could tell you that Italy was called Italy by romans almost 1500 years before Spain could even have an own king and an empire.
Moreover the political name of a country it's only political otherwise today Spain would be a bunch of dukedoms too since Basques want their independence and Catalans too.
Italians didn't appear the day of the unification and for what i remember Da Vinci,Machiavelli(he wanted a unified Italy think how weird)and so on had italian names.
Anyway as i said most city states were not controlled by Spain:

Then we had a large part of Italy who was influenced by renaissance.
