You think Laura Bush does not have any jewelry of same or greater cost? Or Hillary? Or Hannity's wife?
The rule of thumb for engagement rings is three months salary. So that's 25K if you make 100K. Obama makes significantly more than that and is taking a pay cut as President, FYI. This is only an issue because he is President and oh, because he is also black.
It's his $$. It's not even taxpayer derived Presidential salary yet. Therefore its none of our business.
So much jealousy and resentment.
It shows character and his personal attitude as opposed to the lies he fed all the Obama faithful.

More important F--U! I have not made this a race issue and as far as I have neither has anyone else. You know racism doesn't come in just one color? Think about that the next time you choose imply something so reprehensible. Don't waste our time responding. I don't talk to people that stoop to calling me racist as a low blow.

Fine. I will apologize if you can tell me another reason that Obama's personal purchases are relevant.

I truely think it goes to character. This is a man that sold millions of fanatical supporters on his one with the common person rhetoric. Promises of change and giving the less fortunate more than they earned were his cornerstone. Even as opposition to him I feel lied to and deceived that he would make such a blatant show of elitism right after he became guaranteed the job for four years.

Further we all know if a flunky claims it didn't happen, then it really did. He could have been more considerate of his supporters and the impression it gives Americans in general. Did he buy the dog yet? No, and he really could have waited till a better time to do that ring. I suggest after he is unseated in 2012 as a thank you to Michelle for keeping her mouth shut for four years.

Its not elitism. Its affluence. And he did not wave the purchase in people's faces, the press did. And this is the same press that people say is so biased in his favor. Just like the democrats harassed McCain for his eight homes.

Every President has been wealthy. I would bet that Laura Bush and every First Lady prior had a peice of jewelry worth more than 30K.

Additionally, He did not promise anyone more than they earned. He did say he would take less from some in taxes though.

It was reported by an independant news source and no major network has picked it up. I mention none because Fox hasn't covered it either, which refutes the claims by the left that they are a right wing mouth piece.

He promised to punitively tax the "rich" those earning $250k or more. I beg you to check cost of living in NYC and see how $250k here compares to there. It isn't rich by a long stretch.

Obama promised numerous social programs and a "redistribution" of wealth, which litterally means giving someone else something they didn't earn. I don't know you so I assume you are intelligent. If you watched him speak or read articles on him. How can you begin to suggest with a straight face that what he said himself isn't giving to those that didn't earn it that which others did.

I agree that 250K in NYC is not wealthy.

I dispute that he is punitively taxing anyone over 250K for being successful. Punitive requires intent to punish.

Improving social programs, like head start, public schools, healthcare, childcare for working parents so they can work and be productive, those are windfalls. I WORK in NYC now and will be taxed (I work for a Hedge Fund), however I have no problem with a small tax hike for me to help some in need.

There are bad apples who will exploit the system. Welfare is a system fraught with them. However, would you deny a child of a bad parent welfare? The child is innocent. Maybe that kid eats and sleeps indoors because of it. The reality is that most people would rather live above subsistence that public assistance provides and use it to help climb out of poverty and become self-sufficient.

I see and concede most of your point. The last part, "better that 100 guilty men go free than that 1 innocent man be put to death." is essencially your argument. We can't regulate or administer this bloated government program. So just in case 1 child is hoestly in need we must allow the sacking of the keep by thieves. For me it is socialism never and the American people must be retrained to take personal responsibility for their own lives. Those welfare and food stamp programs must be policed and applicants must be scrutinized before accepance. Followed by regular evaluation and not spot checks.

I agree 100%. See there is rational liberal/conservative discourse.

The idea of policing social programs is not new. However, it is prohibitively expensive. Imagine the workforce required to police, spotcheck and scrutinize public assistance across the USA.

Social Services in each state is the perfect example. Foster parents kill kids and biological parents do as well all the time. Social services is discouraged from removing kids from all but the most dangerous homes because it places the burden on the State to care for the child.

I am not going to hang up my brain or my right to speak just because it is the period between the election and the inauguration. Most president-elects, all president-elects have been quiet and put together their people during this time. In 2000 liberals chose not to show courtesy, just a reminder. Obama has been actively seeking out opportunities to discuss his intended agenda. I am commenting on that and it is far more reasonable than the hate mongering liberals have done with Bush. Snake oil salesman hardly rises to the level of name calling. It is colorful phrasing at best.
Nope, Yona, "snake oil salesman" is name-calling. Don't try to paint it as anything else. "Colorful-phrasing" is nothing but weasel words. I really don't think that you have any reason to start your name-calling of Obama this early in the game. We will, of course, look forward to your many "colorful-phrasing" postings in the future.

I honestly point to growing up and hearing my elders using the phrase to characterize different people. Kind of like people on this forum love the term carpetbagger but my parents frowned on its use. I meant no harm and if it is distatefull I will refrain from its use. Done is done, thanks for the input.

I never complained to Bush supporters before he took office. I give every incoming president the benefit of the doubt. I did not start bashing him and/or his supporters until AFTER all the blunders he made. But you...you have this antichrist-like image of Barack and he has not even been sworn in yet. You post a "rumored" story from the web concerning some ring. That's like grabbing the Inquirer for researching current events. This attempt to justify "Barack bashing" by saying Dubya got the same treatment is lame.
I campaigned for the man. I heard him speak and I support his ideas. Darn tootin' I'm on his team. After 8 years of "Hey man, watcheeus!", I am thrilled, honored and excited to have Barack Hussein Obama as our 44th president.
