Spoken by a man who cuts trees and burns wood for heat; he also uses a fairly large John Deere power mower to cut his "beautiful" lawn. Maybe he ought to buuy a few carbon credits himself.

Not being familiar with Stevens's home turf I cannot say whether there is any hypocrisy involved here. His "beautiful lawn" may be nothing more than existing natural grasses and other vegetation kept trimmed back to discourage the rodent and insect population.

However, his points about the energy consumed, the trees removed, and the implied groundwater contamination from fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides are well taken. I wonder how many have ever considered the trees lost, the chemicals strewn, and the WATER consumed by GOLF COURSES, the LARGEST SINGLE USERS of water which produce NOTHING.

It is true that we see not the forest for the trees.

Golf courses produce a bumper crop of old men in checkered pants, so that must be something.

I thought you were smart enough to take that as me agreeing that golf courses produce nothing of value, with their only product being old men in checkered shorts.

Actually they contribute to the sales of replacements for the little round missiles and their launchers that get wrapped around trees or tossed into ponds in frustration by those old men in checkered pants. Goody for Spalding and Ping.

But they are still polluters and resource wasters, which was the obvious point.
