Stamford residents seek more input on school budget

Full story: North Adams Transcript

Some town voters apparently want a second chance to vote on the 2010-11 school budget and possibly to make more cuts, but a reported petition drive has thus far stayed mostly out of the public eye.

After the school board meeting it was deemed not to go any further with the petition ... Having well over the required number of signatures should show the board that it is critical for them to provide more exposure and transparancy.
That was the intent and should have been accomplished at the meeting.

It was decided the additional costs to the town and its taxpayers to have the meeting was not affective as the meeting would not provide any feasable additional savings to the town and still provide the quality of education to the children.

I think some of the residents up here in Stamford think that the board has something to hide. What would these people have to gain? Some of the people have a lot of ideas but "nothing" to back them up. We have heard the same things over and over again about their ideas but they show nothing. Everyone is so worried about saving a buck that they really do not realize how they are going to affect our childrens education. I find it appalling that someone would publically demean others for personal gain. These people that put their heart in soul to serve the public deserve our respect. They are representing us and were elected by majority vote. Maybe the overly vocal majority should think about that next time you dabble in politics!!!!!!!!!:

I've lived in this town many many years and have never seen antics like this in all my days. Since only 30 signatures were needed on the petition, getting more than that really doesn't show a whole lot to the board or anyone else. Even the chairlady of the Selectboard herself said she signed the petition out of curiousity, without knowing the facts. And if the town did hold a special meeting, I would be willing to bet you would not get 2/3 of the vote anyways. That is good enough reason to let this petition drope and let the board get on with doing their job. These are bad economic times for all of us but sticking it to the kids is not the answer. Some people like to hear themselves talk.

I can't believe there is so much contention in this town. Maybe the silent majority should start speaking up a little more so we can all get some peace and quiet. Our taxes are high, yes, but if you recall, the higher town budget cut passed at the town meeting- 15 as opposed to 10 percent. To go gunning for the kids on top of that is utterly shameful, in my opinion. I certainly hope this awful petition goes into the recycling bin ASAP!

Thank You to Sue Bush! It's very sad it takes the presence of a reporter at these meetings to make people listen to themselves and not just run their mouths! Hope to see you more often Sue!!!!!!!

I also understand English just fine, and what I gathered from this article and the comment from "Involved Town Resident" was this: This petition appears to have been designed to embarass and shame the School Board. It was less about the budget (as presented to the signers) and more about settling some personal score. If someone has a problem with the way an elected official is handling something, they should go through the proper channels and complain to their authority. Or, better yet, vote them out of office. Stop subjecting the rest of us to the airing of your grudges, and stop dragging the children of this town down with you.

Yes, We can all read and we all understand English just fine as well! Personal conversations should not become record in the school board meetings for the benefit of personal vendettas. Think about the children involved!

You "gathered" wrong! This petition was sooo not about a personal vendetta. It was about really looking at the school budget and making the BEST decision as a town (we vote the board members in to represent US remember) to provide just that to our students a quality education! Business as usual just can't continue ... And the "newbies" that were referred to in these posts are who will be running our town in the future; we have to give them a listen and a chance. Good for all ~ as new ideas and creativity may come from doing just that!

I believe the biggest tragedy it that other people could so easily be led to believe the second hand information of one person, without checking or asking for clarification to hear say. When did we become such untrusting reactionaries?

If those who believe that any town board has something to hide, then they need to get off their backsides and attend the PUBLIC budget meetings each year. This is how we become informed and learn where our tax dollars are spent. You would have the answers to all your questions and be able to speak intelligently.

Maybe this petition was not about a personal vendetta but some of the people behind have ideas for the best interest of their own homes and how our money should be spent. If the newbies who were running had such great ideas why did not come forward with the before the election because they obviously did not win the election. It is too bad that people who lived in the big city want to come and take our little town over. A lot of things were said at the Town Meeting from much older people that made more sense. It is that principal in the school system who has done nothing but wasted our tax payers money. Hope that they really look into what she is spending, which is a big waste and it is not all on our children!!!

What was the actual count of the vote that reduced the School Budget?

Does Stamford vote the School Budget off the floor as " XX amount or any other sum "...or is it one amount by Australian Ballot?

The reason I ask is the fact that the 2/3rds referred to has to be looked into and clarified prior to any calculations of what it would take to overturn the initial vote. We have done something like that here and its 2/3rds of the prevailing vote in the initial vote has to be attained and still prevail.....you need a minimum amount of people just to participate in the revote to even make it valid.

Dear "Involved": Yes, as you stated, the School Board WAS elected, by the majority, to represent we the people. If they did not have the trust of most of the residents, they would not have been elected. It is perfectly ok to question authority, but to micromanage or seek to intimidate our elected officials is just plain wrong. We can give our advice as to how we would like to see the money budgeted, but at the end of the day, it is the Board who sees the whole picture and makes the decision. If I didn't think they cared about our children or our town, I wouldn't have voted for any of them. And by the way, I do not recall using the word "vendetta" or "newbie" in my post. Those comments came from other residents. It is unforunate that you find it necessary to set yourself against the clear majority, not only in this town, but on this forum. You may have something to offer, but you are going about it all wrong. With all due respect... the day the likes of someone like you (newbie or not) is running this town is the day I will move out. But I think I can rest assured, that day will never come.
