I don't think this woman is going to live or if she does sounds like she will be a vegetable. There are worse things than dying. Incredibly sad.

Well said, Houston. I hope that Ms. Herold, whose reckless and delusional behavior is 100% responsible for this tragedy, is held fully responsible in both a criminal and a civil sense. But even if she pays over all of her assets and spends the rest of her life in prison, how can it possibly compensate her victim and her family?

What really gets me is that, whether or not they were also friendly, Ms. Herold was Ms. Nash's employer and boss. In this economy, what employee is really likely to refuse her boss' request to "come over to my house and help me with my out-of-control chimp?

This tragedy is also truly a crime.

I hope that God will be merciful and take Charla home. What she is facing isn't a life, it's a hellish existence. I pray that she finds peace.

I personally at age 55 would not want to live with the issues facing Charla. I hope that she is still kept in a medical coma as I can not fathom her pain if not. I hope that her family makes the correct decision for Charla in this respect, but in the meantime, this is about Charla, not the ape, not its owner, lets just pray for this woman and let go of the hate. I don't think her friend meant any harm and I am sure there will be court action, so rather than harp on that, I suggest we Pray for Charla, if she survives she's got more ahead of her than any normal person IMO would want to accept. If not, may she rest in peace.

Where is the justice? Why are the police dragging their feet? If this had been a tiger or even a pitbull the guilty party would have probably been arrested at the scene. Mrs. Herold needs to be charged with the crimes she has committed, to be held accountable for her careless and absolute disregard for the safety and wellbeing for her friends, neighbors, and the public in general. Attacks like these are senseless in every form of the word and people including Mrs. Herold need to be shown that if they choose to partake in such reckless and potential deadly activity just by owning these vicious beasts that there consequences for such behavior. These people are nothing more than desperate attention seekers, pimping animals because they lack the ability to generate the attention alone. Mrs. Herold had no problem taking responsibility for all the positive attention; she even turned a profit from it. Now that the animal has reverted back to it’s natural behavior and practically killed this poor woman she gets off the hook, this just goes to show how screwed up our “justice” system really is. There is no need for any one to own such dangerous beasts. But unfortunately, the arrogance and ignorance of people who think they can control them and keep them as “pets” just because they want to be different like everyone else, will never be stopped unless we make it happen. We cannot control the laws of nature but maybe together, we can make the laws of man reflect that.

My prayers are with all involved. I saw Charley's twin brother on the Early Show. It is a day by day time for her. At the moment they are very concerned about infection. I know that the man in California that was attacked in 2005 took 6 months before coming home. So with continued love , prayer and support Charley can make it. The doctor that treated her in the er said that when she came in to the er she was responsive and able to move and he said that he knew then that she had a strong will to live and he said that strong will will help her to recover. They also talked about the fund that has been set up to help her and her daughter. I see it has been posted. Thank you for that.

I pray for Sandra Herold because no one knows also what she is going through. Is she guilty no ? She was allowed by law to keep Travis. It is time that our law makers realize that this types of animals are just time bombs waiting to go off. We need to let our law makers know that we want this stopped. The breeding of these animals to be used in tv and movies and research needs to come to an end. The chimps need to be allowed to run free in their own habitat not mankinds..
To Jason Coats, I think he is the young man that shot and killed Travis' mom Suzie when she was sedated and no longer a threat to him or his friends. Jason , I don't agree that you should have your rights to vote taken away but I am glad to hear that you can't own a gun. My best to you and your family. Animals have rights and feelings. And gunning down a sedated chimp was just not right.

If the law allows you to keep a car or a gun or a wild animal, and the government issues you a permit to do so, does that mean you're off the hook for whatever you do with it? I don't think so. Civilly, you are strictly liable for any harm caused by a wild animal you keep (including chimps) and, as that California couple now doing time for manslaughter found out (after they recklessly allowed their vicious dogs to maul a neighbor to death), you can also be criminally culpable.

If there is anything even remotely good that can come out of this terrible tragedy, it will be keeping reckless, selfish nuts like Sandra Herold from endangering innocent people in the future, so that nobody else needlessly suffers Charla Nash's horrible, horrible fate.

I cannot imagine what it must be like for this poor lady's young daughter and family, and we can only hope that she is sufficiently sedated not to be aware of her condition herself. I am praying for all of them.

I asked this question from day one, and that is more relevant after reading the above story about Charla's condition: why oh why didn't a medical professional tell the family right away, your loved one has injuries that even the best doctors in the world find horrifying and possibly impossible to reverse, and it would be better to let her die.

The legal ramifications will play out as this terrible tragedy goes along, but I just pray that God intervenes soon.

The interview was wierd. The brother seemed to know nothing about his sister's involvement with her employer/friend. Seems like he was not in his sister's life until now. He also didn't mention details about a trust fund. Another poster above has done so.

To Jason Coats real or fake identity....Coats is a disgrace. Witnesses at the scene stated that the chimp had been tranquilized and was down unable to move. The chimp never was close to Coats. Coats stood on the porch of his house and shot three times a chimp that was unable to move. That is why he was convicted. It is a disgrace that Coats or people promoting his cause would use this incident to try to justify his killing of an innocent chimp.

"Civilly, you are strictly liable for any harm caused by a wild animal you keep (including chimps) and, as that California couple now doing time for manslaughter found out (after they recklessly allowed their vicious dogs to maul a neighbor to death), you can also be criminally culpable."

Another legal eagle. Please cite a legal source for your claim of strict liability. The California case has nothing in common with this incident. There were very unique factors in the California case which are not present in this case. There is nothing in common with these cases.

Good observation. That is because he turned his back on his sister and they haven't been in contact for years. Nash and Herold were friends for 30 years and Nash was involved with the chimp for 15 years yet this brother doesn't know anything about their relationship.

The most humane and loving thing the family can do is to instruct the medical team to provide palliative care only. Let this woman have a peaceful sleep until death ends this tragedy. I am so afraid that she will become a medical guinea pig and be forced to have interventions that will continue her suffering and pain.

Perhaps it's best to leave the decisions in the hands of the doctors as well as with anyone to whom Charla Nash may have given durable power of attorney.

Charley's situation is in the hand of God. Her brother or the doctors should not make the decision of wether she lives or dies. That is for God and no one else. I just pray that God's will be done for Charley. I can't even attempt to think of what it must feel like for this family. I just pray that God has mercy on them. To help them make the right decisions in her case. I know so much damage has been done but they can not be God in this case. If Charley lives she will not so much support and care from her family. If her brother was in her life before or not that is in the past but he is there for his sister now. Sometimes tragic things happen for families to mend broken relationships.

Lisa now you have the nerve to critize charla's brother!! what is your problem? Turned his back on her..how can you say something like that? Maybe they werent close..and if they were closer do u think he would have know about her employer and friend..what in details? How much detail do u tell your family about your life, friends, your friends pets etc? And what does any of that have to do with what happened..IT HAPPENED..IT HAPPENED!!!! We're not guessing here what could happen..obviously herold wasnt doing that..the truth is it HAS HAPPENED!!! Dont tell me something like this wouldnt have happened either..You just wait...When the report comes back on Travis's necropsy it will show lots and lots of interesting evidence..Proof and a reason to press charges against her..herold that it. I'm sure she thought drugging that strong wild animal would calm him down..and instead it backfired on her. She should be thanking her lucky stars, because those will be gone soon, that travis didnt turn on her..believe me that would have happened. Now she has to deal with the consequences..period. the results will be in soon..if you dont see them..i'll be sure to let u know!!!

RenoLady you put it perfectly. Medical intervention can keep this woman alive indefinitely, like a vegetable. Would that be the way she wanted to live? Someone has to ask that question, and answer it. IT's unfortunately not in God's hands, it's in the medical team's hands.
