My husband and I were evacuated from our home at approx. 5:45AM on Thursday 08/21/08 when a stand-off with a man accused of shooting an officer during a domestic dispute had barracaded himself in his home only about a block from ours. It was a frightening experience as all of my neighbors and my husband and me were forced to leave our homes with no prior warning.
The officers were heavily armed and in a Huge hurry. All residents were taken to a safe distance from the pending crime scene. I'm guessing about 50 - 75 people. Some were still in pajamas, bathrobes, and towels on their hair. Some had young children,
Just past the yellow police tape a homeowner was kind enough to offer their homes to all the evacuees. They provided us with bathrooms, coffee, breakfast, warm clothing and even sports bras for the ladies that were evacuated without time to grasp the situation at hand. We were welcomed to accept their home as our own. "Make yourself at home".
We were all served breakfast,(eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, toast, coffee, orange juice and water.) Friends and neighbors like this are what draw a small community together and give us all a sense of unity.
The 4 - 5 hour standoff would have been intolerable to say the least, if it had not been for the generosity and true compassion this family afforded us.
They choose not to accept any thanks or rewards for their noble acts. However they should be commended for their genuine generosity and compassion as well as concern for those of us that were ejected from our homes with only a few seconds to 1 minute to gather our keys, cell phones, etc.
The police officers, EMS, Fire Dept, S.W.A.T. team were very mindful of the safety of the citizens and are also to be commended for their professional and rapid reponse.
Thanks and respect go to the law enforcement and the caring family that created a calm to the storm.

That is a awesome!! Our officers, EMS, EMT's, Firemen/women, SRT, SWAT are the best in the state. We are fortunate to be under their care, compassion and professional manner.
It is too bad that Mr. Gibson had such a troubled life. Bad decisions riddled his life. We are thankful Officer Braswell is doing well and is to return to duty on Monday.

He was in and out of trouble with the law, registered sex offender. Don't know how it all started, but it's too bad he died on Fri morning.

One less mutant for society to tolerate.

Wonder why it took them so long to use that robotic devide to look in the house and see what he was doing? I am assuming there was no communication between him and the officers as he had shot himself. He laid there for three hours?

I don't know unless the robot was somewhere else and they had to wait on it. It does sound like they waited a long time.

The robot/camera was provided by Char/Meck Police SWAT. Better to wait and make sure, than to risk additional lives. Regretably a life was lost, many were inconvienced, some met their neighbors for the 1st time. Not a perfect outcome, but it could have been much worse.

Has the woman he had the dispute with made any comments? I wonder what they were fighting about that drove him to such a lowly state?
