How does Stallings, a town of fractional size compared to Indian Trail, afford to have a police department?

I don't understand why the town is paying for Union County Sheriff department. What more in services do we recieve than the Union County towns such as Stallings that have there own police departments ?
It seems most towns have gone the way of there own department ( Stallings, Monroe, Waxhaw are a few that come to mind) there must of been good reason for them to do this.

I would encourage you to listen to what Sheriff Cathey said at the Town Council meeting on Sept. 11. He talked about a lot of the services we receive. http://indiantrail.granicus.com/ViewPublisher...

Some points of fact. IT pays $66,755 per deputy. This includes 8 deputies and 1 Sergeant.
Stallings pays $85,082 per officer, they currently have 20 sworn officers. Stallings spends $1,701,634 for their police department.

These numbers are total public safety budget numbers divided by the number of officers.

The more I research into this, the more I find it to our advantage to continue our contract with the Sheriff. We definatly need more officers. The town and county are working on a grant that will provide IT with 6 more Sheriffs deputies for traffic, which the town will not have to pay for. On top of this, I think we need to add at least 6 more deputies now and work to add more not long after this.

Working with the Sheriffs office will keep our taxes lower.

Looking at your figures to add another 6 deputies we would be at 1.4 Million. Very close to the 1.7 Stallings is spending for there own department.I would really have to see the pros and cons of each.
But my question really is. What exactly are we getting now ? Don't the residents already pay for the Union County Sheriff department in your County taxes? What does it mean that we are contracting these deputies ? If we just stopped paying wouldn't they have to come here anyway since it is Union County ? I feel like I am being charged twice for the same service.

The more I think about it we would be paying 1.4 million for 12 officers and a sgt. Stallings has 20 officers at 1.7 million plus a department that is an asset to the town.

I am not following your math. If we add just 6 officers for a total of 12 and a sgt. it will only cost us $991,518 total. It will cost us $65,121 for every officer we add. The $66k figure is what we are at now, averaging out the higher salary for the sgt. To be at the same level as Stallings,19 officers and 1 sgt. it would cost us $1,317,123 we would save $400K.
If we add our own department, we would have to pick up all the accident calls that the highway patrol currently picks up, which is around 80 a month, this would require about 7 officers just to work accidents.
You are right that the Sheriffs office would provide back up as needed.
We had one of our Sheriffs officers involved in an accident, he has been out for over a month. The Sheriffs department sent us a replacement, had we had our own department, we would just be one short.
Please take the time to listen to the Sheriff, he answers your question about what we get now versus what we would get with our own department.
We will pay taxes to the county, which covers the Sheriffs department, whether or not we have our own police force. Everyone in Union county pays the same county tax, the city rates are different.

Having contract deputies means that they work only in Indian Trail. These 9 deputies are our police department, without the contract, the county would have 9 less positions. If we dropped the contract, it would slow response times and probably cause an increase in crime. Also, there would be a lot of pressure put on Indian Trail to do something about the crime rate.
Santa Clarita, California has a population over 175,000 and they still contract with the Los Angeles Sheriffs office. Santa Clarita is generally ranked in the top 25 safest cities in the US.

I was at the town council meeting when Sheriff Cathey spoke. To be honest I had a few issues with it. He was to be at the meeting to give the council an update on what the sheriff has been doing in town ( He had not been there in over a year !)Which was part of why I was there I wanted to hear an actual report on the town. He instead took it upon himself to campaign for the Sheriff's department. I am always skeptical of anyone who has to keep telling me what a great deal I am getting. I found a lot of his facts and figures contradictory.
Let's be honest at the end of the day Sheriff Cathey is a politican and I felt that this speech rather than an update was no more than political posturing.
I really don't have enough information yet to say that we need our own police force. But I do believe it needs to be looked into by unbiased parties.

This is a hot topic!!!!But lets face the facts,we are not getting what we pay for.Passing an alarm ord,(they will not respond with out a key holder, good news to the crooks, curfew ord, laws already in state statues to cover undisp.jvs,. The numbers are padded on calls,One time sheriff says 10,000 calls in Indian Trail,in paper it said 3400 county wide,You would be real surprised the money paid per officer, broken down its a joke,YOU DO NOT GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!!!!

Having contract with the sheriff does not mean that they only work for IT.The shift Lt.or Sgt. can send them anywhere they want, anytime they want. The contract is extra coverage only.If you take the 65,000,deduct guns radars, computers, uniforms, car, car repairs, office supplies, office equip, Each item is figured Every year per officer, but they dont get a car ,weapons, computers,or radars every year. The extra goes where?

Tonight is a good example of why WE need our own police dept.A car rolled over on Monroe Rd,ejecting 1 person .With EMTs on scene working on 2 critically injured, they requested Monroe Rd to be closed,Indian Trail car on traffic stop at 485,next closest car was in east Monroe at hilltop, other towns dont have trouble getting traffic help for EMTs or firedept,Why should Indian Trail settle for seconds when they can have first,if its money, sell the land they just bought an start there own PD.Theres federal and state grants to help start, also they can apply for more every year.ONLY AFOOL SAYS WE DONT NEED OUR OWN POLICE,I know many others thats tired of paying for NOTHING!!

Everyone needs to read the misleading article in the E-J today about the EXTRA services we are Getting,HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.Any town with or with out there PD,or contract officers get the Exact same services as we do.So what is the article trying to say?The WHOLE COUNTY and ALL towns get the same thing.

You are starting to sound like that stupid Hugh Layburn! I don't want my taxes to go up just so we can have "a police department to call our own." Do we not have a good relationship with the Sheriff? Has the Sheriffs Dept. dropped the ball? Why specifically do we need our own police department? Please don't throw out that stupid population arguement. Has the police chief job for IT already been promised out to Stallings PD Chief Larke Plyler? Why the push?

So again I ask, what problems would we solve by having our own police department versus having the Sheriffs deputies in IT? What is the advantage? It would cost more, so what would be the added cost benefit?

It appears you are with the DAIOIT,if you enjoy paying 75$ for a 5Cent wing nut,so be it.There are a lot more pro's than con's.Go to county finance dept.get a copy of the expense break down on each officer,{I have one}we could have 4 more with the waste.A past sheriff said No one should have to pay for extra coverage, you pay taxes like the rest of the county, besides it is the responsibility of the sheriff to provide EQUAL PROTECTION for ALL citizens,in towns or not.
