What was that explosion last night at 2 AM in North Stafford? Perhaps was thunder due to the sotrm passing through at the time, but was not like any I've ever heard before.

I felt it too and it did not feel like thunder. About 5 of my friends felt it as well. Woke us all up. I am definitely interested to know what that was.

We heard/felt it in Summerwood and others in surrounding neighborhoods as well. The Sheriff's office has reports of the 'noise' but no indication what it was. Called Quantico...not them. Called Stafford Public Communications...they don't know. Called Aquia water utilities, awaiting return call. I'm wondering if lightning hit the water tower in Stone River, the explosive noise reverberated for what seemed like 60 seconds.

I posted that last comment. I am not in Woodbridge, but in Stafford...near the Courthouse. I don't know how to change my location.

I heard it as well, it woke my wife and I up... we have spoken to people in aproximately a 20 mile radius that all heard and felt it. It could NOT be thunder at that time. Sonic boom from fighter jet? Quantico explosion? Earthquake? It shook my house like nothing ever has before

My husband said thunder and was back asleep with in min. I passed around looking out windows looking for the fire. After about 15 minutes, there was one lightning strike then another small thunder rumble. I'm chalking it up to thunder. Or... 2012 end of the world stuff like birds falling from the sky, dead fish in a stream, strange weather patterns, and solar explosions. Nope just really loud thunder.

I initially thought thunder too. However, after talking to a bunch of people at a little league baseball game that evening and several ppl heard it at exact same time in a 20 mile radius. Thunder doesn't shake homes in a 20 mile radius. For our house to shake like that would have had to have the strike right in our back yard.

What if lightening hit a large water tower, would it reverberate through the water and sound like an explosion?
