Caroline "Pride Rock" County has a long way to go
when the facts are clear that residents want high speed internet service as well as many other services this area lacks
but with a competitive price and value .....it's a rip off get a clue!

Mrs. Deagle,

Just because you chose poorly when it came to where you moved, doesn't mean the whole county is bad. I live in Ladysmith village, I am on comcast high speed internet, have digital cable (HD), and have my phone service through the cable lines, so it's cheaper than going with verizon. We get trash pickup twice per week, and have everything we would ever need. Oh, and our water is crystal clear and tastes fine.:)

I do agree that the through the air internet is a waste though... it would be better to just extend the DSL network to those areas still in need of high speed internet.

Yes, sales have gone down, but they have gone down almost EVERYWHERE in the whole US. Of course people who got their home at the peak of the housing market are going to take a loss on their property, but that is the same no matter where you purchased. As for lasysmith village itself, development is going great as far as I know. A new developer has taken over. This is causing a lot of possitive changes. They are planting a LOT of trees and bushes around the streets and even the alleyways. They are also going to locate the community center, with pool and all, near the library, instead of all the way over in the other section. Lots of homes are being built, and are selling. Just last week people moved into the house across the street AND two doors down. A few weeks before that people moved into a house down the alley from us. Not to mention that we moved in back in early December.

Back to home prices, YES, the prices are going down, but have you seen the origional pices from when Ladysmith Village was first advertising? They were selling homes from the mid-200's and up. When the market peaked, most homes were going for around 400k, but now the market has slowed down again, and the prices have gone down too, but they still are not lower than when they first started. From what I have heard, 2 of the builders are going to stop building. One is Hamlet homes. They built the cheapest homes in ladysmith village. Once they finish selling the few they have left, the neiborhood will be better off without them. The other is Castle Builders. They mostly built town homes... I can't say I'll be sad to see them go.[sarcasm] Oh no, less town homes![/sarcasm] Also the new developer got rid of the apartment area that was going to be built.

All-in-all I think Ladysmith Village is a lot better because of this market slow down. The prices are back to a reasonable amount, it's weeding out the weaker builders, and it's making the new developer spend more time and money to make this a place people want to move into. If you haven't been to Ladysmith Village in more than a few months, I suggest you come back for a visit... it's really starting to look good.

The YMCA is going off of the southern side of Durrett Rd, right by where the library, community center, and new visiter center are going to be. Basically if you were to stand in front of the library (on the south side) and were looking at it, to your left would be the community center, to the upper left and right would be the live-work shops, behind you would be the visiter's center, and behind that (on the other side of Durrette Rd) would be the YMCA.

You really should come by sometime, the trees are really making the place look nicer. Also they put the final grade of pavement on the streets around Founders Park. Oh, and just this weekend they have begun to expand the playground area to include a park in the space on either side of the play ground.

Oh, and since you posted about the apartments... if you remember where the apartments were going to be, that is where the community center will be now.

If you don't like it or are having reception issues, they will come out and remove it at no charge if within the first year.
I have it and they were able to switch my reception from a different tower after leaves on the trees interfered with getting a good signal.

Eric, the rest of ladysmith does not enjoy high speed/digital cable, only ladysmith village does... and why? I'll explain it to you and why the rest of us think things suck so bad...
The rest of us have been paying comcast for many years for an antiquated analog cable system that doesn't even have a damn preview channel so you can see whats comin on when. The area was/ is serviced by the NoVa Comcast office who refused to do the necessary equipment upgrades for cost reasons to give the area what is needed for high speed internet and digital services. Tho for years they talked about updating, it has yet to happen. Within the last year or so the Richmond comcast office decided it wanted to take over the ladysmith area because it is closer but what they wanted was the NoVa office to spend about 3 million dollars to update the system before they took it over which of coarse the NoVa office refused to do stating if they shell out the cash they should keep the area and its revenue. This internal bickering is still going on now.

As for Ladysmith Village, your subdivision had a fiber optic line drawn about 30 miles from Ashland , VA specifically to service it from the Richmond Office and is why you have better service then the rest of the area. Oh and btw that line is also at max capacity just to service LV so no one else can us it. Now to me thats bullsh*t.

Those of us that have been in the area for years have been paying for inferior service while the new folks in town who haven't paid a dime get the latest and greatest right out of the gate.

A quick note, it looks like a few posts are missing (you can tell based on the post number), which is why it looks like I'm replying to myself or something.

And you're right about the line coming out of Ashland... an evidence of that is the 'Ashland' below my name in most posts (When I post from home).

I do think it's stupid that they're taking so long to wire Lake Land'Or and Lake Caroline... but from their point of view, I'd want to lay upgraded cables in a new community right off the bat... otherwise you'd have to do twice as much work to upgrade it later.

I >think< that no-one else can use the fiber optic line from Ashland, because the Developer of Ladysmith Village had something to do with the laying of the cable. I was told once that there was a 'contract' with Comcast... so I don't know if the developer helped to pay to run the cable or what... but that would make sense to me. If they paid to have the cable run, that might be why only Ladysmith Village has digital cable, and not LLO, LC, or even Pendleton.

After some time dealing with VABB on reception issues I am ready to dump them this week. Wind, leaves temperature apparently have an effect on this sytem. Some days great. Other days sucks. They say they can't do anything more. So, out they go.
So, what to do? I just went to the Verizon kiosk at VCC bought a broadband modem. Because of the rebate I only have to pay $2.95 tax. the monthly bill for 5GB download is $59.95, a few buck more than VABB and faster. I loaded it yesterday to my new Mac works fine.
VABB come and get your antenna.

VABB is horrible. Incompetent customer service. We have dealt with their lies and bullshit for 4 years. Itís always the wind, the rain, leaves. someone got a new toy that is interfering wit their signal. In January we lost service for almost the whole month. They refused to acknowledge it was their issue and refused any refund for the lack of service. Reported them to the BBB and guess what, they terminated my service. What a bunch of crap. Since they are not regulated there is nothing you can do. They are the only game in town so I am screwed. Bottom line, it you have VABB and have issue, DONíT complain. They cry baby CEO will cut you off.

Have you tried any of the mobile broadband plans? I'm in Caroline and using Sprint mobile broadband. It's $60/month. I don't know how that relates to VABB. Verizon also has a service. The speeds are as not high as DSL or cable, but probably similar to VABB. And no outages.

She's right. I have Verizon's mobile broadband modem and it's actually faster than my PC at work in F'burg.$60 a month is worth it.

It will be faster if you are closer. I'm not sure how far I am from a tower. I'm satisfied with my speed. When I got Sprint, you had 30 days to try it. If you weren't satisfied with the speed you could cancel and get a refund on the modem. Sprint and Verizon probably still offer that.

Also, if you can get to their websites you can look at a map of your area and see if they have service there.
