Here is your primary problem- They get drunk, they drive and they get caught. The prosecutor doesnt want to spend tons of time on it so defendant pleads to a lesser charge. He walks with a slap on the wrist and two days later is at it again, eventually he will kill an innocent person and we will learn it was his 8th or 9th DUI.

When will the courts wake up and slap it to em hard the first time so that they think twice about doing it again?

As long as a criminal gets slapped on the wrist for doing wrong he /she will do it over and over again. It becomes a careless game to a criminal when they know nothing will happen in the end.

Here is what I propose- First offense Immediate revocation of driving privileges for 5 years- to be run alongside a min 2 year prison sentence. That gives them 2 years to sit and think about why they are there, and 3 more after they get out as a reminder of why they cannot own or operate a motor vehicle. Oh and also they have to have the standard probationary period where they are tested at random and prove they are staying straight.

5 year of hell! when will lawmakers wake up?

Wise1, you are too lenient. We need to take these people out of our lives for much more than 5 years. I can lease a car without paying interest for less than that! It terrifies me to think that they would only have 2 years to sit and think about why they are in prison, that's only 17 thousand hours... what in the hell are they going to figure out in 17 thousand hours?

You know what? 17,000 hours is better than no hours which is what a lot of these freaks get off with. I am sorry NO PROBATION ONLY sentences they need to do hard time if they drink and drive. Sure the amount could probably be higher, certainly if they are caught after they hurt someone that should change to an appropriate amount of time just as if they intentionally killed someone. In my humble opinion if you drink and drive, you get into an accident and kill someone it is murder!!! you chose to drive drunk, you turned the key , you did not take proper precautions to make sure you could not get behind the wheel.

Not all circumstances are the same, so each would have to be looked at differently but no drunk driver should escape prison time even on a first offense.

You know, if we held monthly public executions at the Bwk football field we wouldn't have these problems. Just think! There'd be WAYYYY less crime and a LOT more tax revenue too. Maybe that would make a few of our "elected" officials forget about their thilly little parking meter caper.
