The lady who passed away, in the fire, was my aunt, Zella Hendon. Aunt Zella had many friends on the island that she played cards with and was a regular at church. I know this may sound boring to most people however until you lose a loved one you really don't know how much it means to talk about someone you loved. Aunt Zella was a proud, self sufficient woman. She never married or had children. She was an interesting and intellegent person to talk with. A great sense of humor, especially for having to put up with me. She treated my cousins and me like we were her kids. Consider yourself lucky in life if you are able to come across someone who was fasinating and loving and considered you a part of thier life. I love you Aunt Zella. Say hi to Dad.

I was Zella's neighbor, and wanted to say that she was a very sweet women and neighbor. I saw her taking care of her yard everyday. I hope she has family out there to read this!

I am a local on St. Simons and I met Zella around June of this year. She was a very kind, understanding woman. We enjoyed many conversations throughout the months. She genuinely cared about me and all of her friends. The last time I saw her was that Thursday morning, I was heading to a seminar in her home town (Ft. Lauderdale) and was looking forward to sharing my experience with her when I returned. I was very sad and distraught to hear the news of her death. While our friendship was short it was a pleasure to meet her and she will be dearly missed! Rest in Peace.

Hey Jay, you don't know me, but I am one of your distant Hendon cousins (from Josiah Hendon all the way down the ancestral line, to Northern Alabama through my grandma). I am sorry for the passing of your aunt, my cousin as well.

She is with Jesus now, basking in the glory of our Lord Most Highest.

Zella Hendon was my third cousin (our great-grandfathers were brothers). We met in Albuquerque, NM, in 1995 by a phenomenal coincidence of our being tourists at the same place at the same time. We both lived in Georgia and our friendship thrived. Zella and I had roots in Cloud's Creek Baptist Church, founded by our ancestors in 1788. It was Zella who suggested we apply for a historical marker. The state-sponsored marker along with a charter members plaque were dedicated in 1999. Every time I see the marker, I think of Zella, as it is her legacy.
