St. Marys group sets sights on city attorney's bills

Feb 2, 2011 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Florida Times-Union

After mounting a petition drive that landed the St. Marys City Council before a county grand jury to answer questions, a citizens group now believes it has found some money to account for.

Didn't someone predict months ago that the only thing this citizens committee would accomplish is huge legal fees.

Here is what burns my chaps in that article:

As for the current bills, Deloughy said he hasn't studied them, but believes some of the compensation was for handling the refinancing of bonds to build the Scrubby Bluff wastewater treatment plant. The city will save about $3 million through the refinancing. Those legal fees are normal for such work and are part of the financing package, he said.

I know the Mayor is not the City Manager but he needs to have a handle on the city's expenditures and when you have a $100,000 legal bill you damn well better know what that money is being spent on
When someone asks that question you should be able to give them an answer

Mr Moore's hourly rates are not the issue. What IS of concern to the citizens of St. Marys is the frequency with which certain members of council avail themselves of his services.$113,139.24 in eight months is a shocking amount - particularly during a time that should be marked by economic restraint on the part of city officials. The fact that DeLoughy doesn't check the itemized bills is just plain irresponsibility as is the fact that Moore doesn't list who he's spoken with or emailed - so how is it possible to monitor the two-hour tasking limit?

Re: "I'm also quite confident that some of the same ones complaining are the same ones causing us these legal fees," Hase said." and "Every time we turn around, someone is making another charge against us. We have to address them, otherwise it would be foolhardy," Deloughy said.
Check the two highest months - June and August. In what way were the concerned citizens "causing" legal fees then?

General Representation City Solicitor
Month 2010
May $ 137.43
June $ 18,031.35
July $ 12,728.95
Aug $ 18,315.23

What The Five seem incapable of grasping is that the citizens are not causing these insane fees, council is!

"Every time we turn around, someone is making another charge against us. We have to address them, otherwise it would be foolhardy," Deloughy said."
Maybe, Sir, you should ask yourself why this is happening.(Hint: boathouse, sunshine laws, airport etc.)

Deloughy and Hase are full of B.S. and the other three are just as bad. They are tax and spend jerks and the outrageous fees have zero to do with any citizen group. That is an our right damn lie. They are ineffecent asses who are out of control. Put the blame where it belongs. They are liars and half ass council members. Never have so many been offended and affected adversely by a bunch of tin horn politicans. They are a continous embrassment and meance that need to be run out office and out of town would be even better. We need a public enema for that sorry lot.

Not really. We all know why: sour grapses from the last city elections and dirty politics aimed at the next election.

Special interest groups are fighting for control of the city bank account. No one is looking out for the hard working, tax payers living in the sub divisions who go to work everday and pay the high water and sewer rates and high property taxes. At the moment no one is representing this silent majority. The vast majority only want to be charged reasonable water and sewer rates, reasonable property taxes and have police and fire protection.

The silent majority is not trying to save their job or business at the airport. The silent majority is not seeking extra public funds to add to the bed taxes. The silent majority is not not on a vendetta seeking revenge for the firing or removal of personnel. The silent majority is not trying to trash the current city government while they look forward to the next election. The silent majority is not trying to gain control of the city bank account for the purpose of financial rape of St Marys.

The Grand Jury has no roll to play in this dirty political game and should refuse the gambit. Politics contest should be played out in fair elections.

What nonsense, Jay/Deb - as usual! How would the citizens know about things like the insane attorney fees if the group who approached the grand jury wasn't "looking out" for the people of St. Marys? That's OUR money being wasted, OUR laws broken, OUR city government running amok. People tried endlessly and futilely to find answers, have an open dialogue with them...and then had no recourse but to look to a "higher power" (the grand jury).
You say that we should all wait until the next elections but how would people even know about the antics of this council without the hard work and civic commitment of the people who are exposing their misdeeds?
Clearly, accountability and transparency mean as little to you as they do to The Five.

If that is the motive(NOT) I'm glad this motivation is reaching into the antics of the current council. I guess the other bloggers were correct when they stated you received a in home visit from Charlie Smith.

Again, the worst possible thing that will occur in St. Marys will be the day that DeLoughy starts his roll as Mayor/City Manager. This situation is really history repeating itself. Private/Public ventures will surely increase and the burden on the taxpayers will be at unbearable highs. Please believe the worse is yet to come. Thank God for all of those working so diligently in the background. All of this hardwork is going to prevail. Prudence is the key to success.

Let me see if I get this straight. Violate the Sunshine law. No problem. Abuse executive sessions no problem. Exclude memebers of property committee on boat house purchase no problem. Increase Mayors spending to $5,000.00 with no questions and make that change with no puplic input no problem. Prepare a bogus apprasial on airport property no problem. Take information from executive session and go to Calvin Lang and advise what City will bid to chill the bid no problem. Allow attorney to lump bill together so you can't determine time on each bill and who uses his services no problem. Allowing employees and officials to use the services of attorney as they please no problem. Question. When does violation of oath of office, malfeasance, misfeasance, violation of laws become a problem? Question. How does the ballot box cure the illegal actions? The grand jury is the watch dog for abuse. I say sic em on them.

I also find it disturbing that in the article Hase and DeLoughy both said that they hadn't seen the attorney's bills. Do they just write massive checks from the public coffers without even LOOKING at what they're paying for??? Apparently so.

The reason this is all taking place starts with special interest groups. Camden Parnership, Charlie Smith attorney for Jones and Sea Island bunch and Shelia McNeil paid lobbist for Camden Parneship. We are to pay for an airport for Smith's clients to enrich their developement and the puppets on the council are hell bent on it happening. Now we have a rip off attorney to contend with. Silk stocking Island boy laughing his ass off while toting our Camden money to Glynn. How long would Brunswick put up with a Camdne attorney representing there City? About as long as it takes a humming bird to flap a wing. I also wonder how many residents of Osprey Cove understand that nit wit Deloughy has caused a lot of resentment for Osprey? Of course the rest of St. Marys is to blame for the sorry ass Hase.

How many people does it take to screw an entire city?

Answer: A N.J. Yankee mayor, a dumb ass broad, a grining ass teacher, a sissy ass, and a damn fool that can talk and never make a point.
