Hey, I miss Clark's subs. Anyone know whatever happen to the submarine chain? Or maybe Subway must have drove them out of business.

Clark's in Bloomington(98th & Lyndale Ave)... On the way to the lake, after a Twins, Northstars, or Vikings game... or just taking a break between cruisin' the strips. I'll second (third, fourth fifth, etc.) the memories of the tasty smell of bread and fixin's that hit as you walked into the shops!!!!!!!!
Everytime I think of getting a sub sandwich, Clark's is front and center (yet none has ever compared) even after 30+ years.
P.S. Don't quote me on this, but I believe the rolls were of the French Sourdough variety... at least that's closest, chewest roll I can find when I "try to replicate" my own.
Should start a Facebook page to try and resurrect them.

By the way. There were not any Clarks franchises. All Clarks stores were exclusively owned by two brothers. Clarks went bankrupt. They kept the 7th and Arcade store open but changed the name to "The Original Sub Shop". I do not know why but they closed it sometime during the late 1990's.
. correction... to this post... I am married to one of the owners and they are not brothers... Don Evans and Clark Armstead full partners, invented the subs opened and owned all in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Colorado.... partners still!

... wrong again, funny how rumors start... this son that works at linders, is the son of Clark's actual brother... but not the owner of 'clarks', he did a for a short time own one of their few franchises...

Basically the onslaught of excessive Subways eventually forced Clark's out of business. Folks just went for a cheap sub 'stitute' Lol and they couldn't compete with the marketing power of a nationwide, international 'franchising' giant!

No, they are not around anymore. My grandparents owned 2 of them. They closed late 80's I want to say. Subway had taken over. Its nice my grandma still knows the recipe for the sauce and is going to make the subs in a couple of weeks for the family..
Could you have your grandmother share the recipe? I was just thinking of them and haven't had one since I was like 8 years old.

I worked at Clark's in the early 70's. I believe Cousins bought out the shops. It was two brothers that owned it.
Wish I had the recipe for the Ham Salad sandwiches.
When I worked there.

What I also heard is they tried to expand too quickly and also opened a restaurant called the Frog Town Diner which did not do well.

WOW! Everyone is pretty flattering! Are you sure your memory serves you? Could it possibly be that they just couldn't live up to this praise?
It seems to me the sandwiches could sell very well today.
