Father beaten trying to protect daughter at Valleyfair

A father who tried to protect his 12-year-old daughter after she was groped while leaving Valleyfair amusement park was beaten, stomped in the face and kicked by a group of young men, police said.
The 41-year-old victim, identified in a criminal complaint only by his initials, was unconscious when police arrived. He suffered skull fractures and possible bleeding on the brain, the documents said.
"We see assaults, but that's brutal," Shakopee police Sgt. Jay Arras said.
Six men, ranging in age from 18 to 22, have been charged with third-degree felony assault. A 14-year-old boy was also arrested.
Arras said the man and his family were leaving Valleyfair around midnight on July 4 when a man "tried to grab the 12-year-old girl in a sexual manner."
Scott County Attorney Patrick Ciliberto said the girl was either touched or slapped on the buttocks. The father yelled to protect his daughter, but the man called in some friends who were at the park.
When the friends arrived, the father "was jumped from behind by all of them," Arras said.
The man's wife and daughter watched the beating, Arras said. The victim's wife said the men took turns stomping on her husband's face as he was on the ground.
Valleyfair released a statement saying: "Guest and employee safety is always the top priority at Valleyfair. Valleyfair is a very safe family amusement park, and we will continue to do whatever is necessary to make it as safe as possible for our guests and
employees."
Charges of third-degree felony assault were filed against Darris D. Evans, 20, of Brooklyn Park; Derry D. Evans, 19, Minneapolis; Devondre Evans-Lewis, 18, of Columbia Heights; Terry L. Arnold, 22, of Brooklyn Park; Andrew D. Shannon, 19, of Minneapolis; Anthony C. Gildersleeve, 20, Edina; and the unidentified juvenile.
Bail was set at $40,000 to $60,000 each and all have posted bail bonds, officials said
Park security also responded to the attack, but the suspects had already left the area. They were arrested by Shakopee police. An eighth person sought in the attack hasn't been found, Shakopee Capt. Jeff Tate said.

No we are not safe! A altercation like this can happen anywhere, anytime for any reason. Just look at someone wrong and it can decend to this. People with this menality know they can bully people and usualy get away with it. When the slightest oposition to one of these people can bring down trouble like this. They have no shame.

Thank God they did arrest them, not tha they will get any real time or anything. They all should be charges with attempted murder. The story was being talked about on puplic radio yesturday morning, I wonder why it took over a week to hit the news.

Mnnative, thanks for the legwork, although most of us could have probably guessed that these "youth" weren't first-time offenders whose actions were just "misunderstood".

It's a shame that some law-abiding citizens might feel the need to "carry" at a family oriented amusement park. I'm sure that it would come as quite a surprise to most of these micro-intellectual criminals that someone might have the ability to defend themselves and their family.

One day these thugs, or others like them, will come up against someone whose (legally purchased and permitted) gun is bigger than theirs and has enough rounds to respond effectively. Then we will be reading on here about how they were good kids who were turning their pimping, violence-ridden, drug selling lives around.

We will probably also be seeing posts demanding that the intended victim should be imprisoned for not giving the animals a chance to reconsider their decision to attack, and enrolling them in anger management classes.

Your welcome on the posts, I want to know what kind of people are doing these things and at least with a forum such as this, some others can also see that it is not just your average person having a bad day that is doing these horrible crimes.

As far as to carry, I do not know all the laws, so I can not comment on what could happen if a person with a permit was there what they could have done. Could someone with a permit step in and used their gun when it is not them being beaten up? How does it work? Anyone?

I have been meaning to sign up and go to classes for a permit, but have not had the time. At least I know I am going to now, esp with the bus driver incident right this.

People (especially the thugs) would be very surprised to see the wide range of law-abiding citizens who have chosen to avail themselves of the option to carry. It would be foolish for them to attempt to profile a "typical" permit holder.

Before anyone accuses me of being pro-gun, or pro-vigilante, let me make it perfectly clear that I abhore this violence. The idea of these predators roaming our city at will offends me. The idea of anyone attempting to take the law into their own hands offends me just as much.

The need for an intended law-abiding victim to defend him or herself, and their family is a different matter (IMO). Given the level of violence displayed in this, and other recent attacks, it would be foolish to believe that many or most of the "kinder and gentler" forms of self defense (martial arts, pepper spray, rape whistles, etc.) would be an effective means of defense.

I am not an attorney so I will not attempt to define the deadly force laws, there are many other legitimate sources available. Suffice to say that, as a general rule, if you fear for your life, or the life of another, the use of deadly force may be considered justifiable. Whether you can live with such a decision is another matter.

Of course, no method of self defense is as effective as avoiding potentially dangerous situations when possible, being aware of your surroundings, running away when you can and taking a stand only as a last resort. Also, report every incident to local law enforcement as soon as you can safely do so.

Agree totally. While I also hate the idea violence, it is there. Staring us all in the face. I will say that I am pro gun, never thought I would be, but I am.

I also agree with avoidance as well, but where to draw the line. This guy was out with his family and his daughter was sexually assaulted. What man/father is going to not say something?

I already have changed my lifestyle to the point that I will not use the grocery or gas stations in my area. There are too many thugs/teens hanging out. I have already had one kid bouncing around my car trying to intimidate me.

It is hard to be in places especially being female. I tend to take the bus to get to work and there are many people that are like the ones that I deal with in the Downtown St Paul area. I tend to find a longer way to get to work so that I do not have to even go in the locations anymore.
With the thugs going to jail so many times, it is hard to beleive that they do not stay in prison for a ling time. They must want to stay in MN since they would would be in prison is other states for a very long time.

First of all, let me suggest that you consider writing in english and using punctuation so that we can understand your point.

Now, if I've correctly identified your points among all of the street slang, let me point out:

The attack occurred in the community. I don't recall ever seeing signs that banned members of any race at Valleyfair. Speaking only for myself, it has nothing to do with the fact that they are black, or where they were. It has to do with their BEHAVIOR.

This was an intentional, organized assault on a man who attempted to defend his daughter. The "man" that you refer to left the scene of the original confrontation and returned. Her age is not as important as the fact that these thugs (I use that term because it is borne out by at least one of their criminal records) CHOSE not to accept the reprimand that the father rightfully gave them. Instead he went for backup (thereby demonstrating his cowardice and premeditation) and the group returned to BEAT the man severely.

We wouldn't put "there (sic) business on here" (I'm assuming you mean their criminal records)if 1. they didn't have criminal records, and 2. it wasn't a matter of public record. Their criminal records say all that needs to be said about their character.

If they have something to say, or would like to defend their honor, they are welcome to post a response on this thread. I would suggest that before they do so, they attempt to make it readable. They should also be prepared to read what other posters have to say in response, it's probably not going to be nice.

You are correct on one point though, I only know what was printed, what the victim's family's statement to Police said, what witnesses reported, and what Evans' lengthy criminal history says. Those facts make anything he has to say extremely suspect, but I'll read anything he cares to post here.

As for the tapes - I think they'll speak for themselves. I'm sure the investigators have already seen all of the available evidence.

I'm sure that the "men" (your term, certainly not mine) and the victim and his family DO know exactly what happened, although I suspect that their versions will differ in court (particularly since Evans won't even tell the truth when asked his name by Police).

Perhaps God will judge him, I just don't think society can afford to wait that long.

I also have no interest in seeing them put under the jail as you suggest, inside will be fine with me.

What is it that you are having difficulty with? It is people like you that instigate race problems because you keep whinning that "it;s just because they are black"! Black people do bad things they will go to prison just like any white person whodoes something bad. I think it is a simple concept, try to grasp it.
