Tommy
by Rudyard Kipling
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy,'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!
Amazing

I think that once benefits go down there will be no desire to defend all those that sit on their high horse. Military enlistment will dwindle and then lets see how long it takes before China is rumaging through these people's homes.

How often can government ask those that perform and make a difference to sacrifice? When are they going to decide that its time for THEM to take a pay cut. Stop giving the money to those that will not work and encourage the ones that do. We have become a sad nation.

Anyone that thinks the military gets paid too much has NEVER worn the uniform of their country. The fact that service members are eligible for food stamps and WIC until they are an E5 is stupid. The people that complain the most have never missed a birthday or holiday because they were deployed. If you are jealous because you see a guy with a nicer car than you or because they are not just leeching from the government I recommend you sack up and raise your right hand and join the institution you are thinking is over paid. I do believe that you will change your mind if you do. The military as a whole is severely underpaid for what they are asked to do.

OK, since when is possibly not getting as much of a raise considered a pay cut? If you will actually watch the interview or read what Panetta said, he recommended that the pay RAISE be cut from 1.7% to 1.0%. Quit reacting to someone putting out bad information and do a little research before you spout off. CNN reported that this is ESSENTIALLY a pay cut. The last time I checked, a pay raise, no matter how small, is never a pay cut! Educate yourselves!

And, yes, I did serve for 20 years and had low or no pay raise at times. You do what you have to do. And if there are E-5 or even E-4 members that need to be on food-stamps or any other financial assistance, that is usually just a case of financial irresponsibility.

Just Saying!

This definition of this pay cut comes right out of the Obama economic handbook.

You don't qualify for food stamps by bank but by gross income.

It's not those E-4/5's who are financially irresponsible, it's the good folks who could care less about work and responsibility.

And what exactly do you think the bank gets supplied by? Wait, you're right, gross income! My point about the financial irresponsibility is that they wouldn't have to be on food-stamps if they had more financial responsibility. And, being eligible and NEEDING it are two completely different things.
For example; Just because you overspend compared to what you earn, or in a lot of cases, don't earn, doesn't mean that you NEED government assistance.

Really Not Yours, I was only responding to the fact that there are a lot of people that believe the military get paid a lot and the fact is that they don't. You don't have to be financially irresponsible to need government assistance although I agree that it could be a reason but not everyone falls into that category. All you really need to be financially strapped is a family. JUST SAYING
