Florida Republican legislators are ramming through "Bills that would eliminate permanent alimony in Florida and lift spouses from financial “life sentences” are moving their way through the House and Senate."

It makes no difference that "The Family Law Section of the Florida Bar opposes both the measures."

Just another Republican attack on women, what's new? Absolutely nothing, they are the death and destruction party of America. Avoid them at all costs.

Ladies, say what you must at home to keep peace, but on your ballot, vote for the Democratic Party as they NEVER pass bills such as this.

And inform your female friends in Florida of this travesty and to contact their elected officials!

So is this a bad idea?
"
Alimony is a court ordered payment of support. There is bridge the gap alimony, meant to transition a person from married to single life and may not exceed two years; rehabilitative alimony, meant to encourage self support through redevelopment of skills or credentials; and durational alimony, meant to provide economic assistance for a period of time."
PS, were in Georgia.

God forbid that someone would actually have to take care of themselves and not depend on someone else to do it for them. Former Republican Woman, get a job and then get a life.

Since women are on the losing end of divorce economically about 95% of the time, this just proves once again Republicans have no clue how to not alienate women voters. If I lived in Florida, you can bet my representatives would get an earful. Hopefully they are and this Republican mess dies.

Thanks for the heads up for our girlfriends in Florida!

I don't doubt your 95% figure. I wonder how the offenders stack politically.

You've heard the term payback is a bitch. In some cases that is woman's view. I know of one that her total view was to stick it to her X. Take everything.
Point. Alimony and child support are not the same.
The Fla. Republicans have introduced legislation to improve alimony law.
So I'm siding with them, alimony is not a lifetime entitlement.

Your wrong there sport. When you've taken the best and most productive years of a woman's life and then decide to bail out on her, you owe fair and lifetime financial compensation for those years and opportunities she'll never, ever have again. That's the way it works.

If Republicans quietly ram this through it will be devastating to millions of women. It's bad legislation. Period.

My girlfriend and a friend of hers did a pretty good thread about GOP attacks on women before the election. I promised I'd put these links if I came across threads like this one. Here's the link.

Her friend did a follow up thread about a few attacks after the election. You'll have to scan through the thread for her posts under the name Jenny. The things she put are spaced out over it.

what you just wrote is not just Republican. You have an interesting comment. I probably know your answer but what if the woman becomes a financial burden? You know every penny he makes she spends, and extravagantly. Also you assume all divorces are the fault of the man.

Women deserve lifetime alimony because of missed opportunities and etc.. You have to be freaking kidding me. If the woman stays with the man it is definitely her choice. Along with that, who is to say that the women are so angelic in all of this? Quit burning your bra and living off of your sugar daddy and live YOUR own life.

This is the most assinine statement I have ever heard. Why should a man have to support a former spouse for the rest of their lives. The last time I heard this is a free country and you need to get off your backside and support yourself. If you chose not to have a life during your marriage that's on you. I am a woman and proud to say I think this law is archaic and should have been thrown out years ago. I know someone who is paying his former wife of a mere 13 years alimony for life. This woman has a masters degree in culinary arts. She is quite capable of supporting herself. But that isn't taken into account. She doesn't get the alimony because she needs it she gets it she can. That's B.S. If the law was more equitable like maybe supporting the ex for a short term until they could get on their feet it would be more equitable for both sides. But why should men be the only ones to pay the price. They didn't hold guns to the women's heads and make them get married. Anyone to suggest these women are somehow entitled to lifetime support is an idiot.
