The local economy will not be affected by the closing of the Jumping Place. It would not be affected by the airport closing either. But if the base closed that is another story.

Who owns the "Navy Exchange" ?

Where is their home office ?

What ethnic group benefit from the Navy Exchange ?

Why is the Navy exchange system different than other branches of the military ?

What are you talking about. The local economy is already affected by the airport and who runs it. You have an FBO that charges over $7.00 a gallon in aviation fuel which is one of the highest around. The amenities the FBO has is a joke for incoming pilots. The airport authority rejected fully funded on airport weather which would make flights safer. The airport authority has blocked anyone else from building more hangars which bring in more aircraft, fuel sales, and businesses. Fernandina has a long waiting list for hangars there.

Ok folks. security in certain areas of the base is trained to use deadly force against any unauthorized entry (see parachutist) what the "stupid" admiral and captain are trying to avoid is an incident where a civilian gets killed because they land in an off limits area. The answer is not "oh well the navy should be able to deal with it" A gaurd on duty does not know the intent of any particular skydiver. If you think the navy is "silly" to be concerned you don't understand how a security posture works nor how personnel are trained. as to the housing issue the # of available rentals in the area is above what the market can bear due to the extreme overbuilding when all the developers were borrowing money like crazy to just keep throwing up housing like this area was going to become miami or something. The stupid "condo" project near NFCU that is now what? low income housing. to cry that it is all the navys fault for privatizing housing is sour grapes

The Marines are perfectly well trained to deal with situations like this.

My point exactly, and they have to react to any and all intrusions. The base commander want's to as much as possible eliminate intrusions. I have dealt with security for over thirty years and to have a situation where the occaisional skydiver will drop into a security area is ludicrous.

To my knowledge the Baseball field on upper base is it a security area ?

Even if it were it would only take one killing and it would end any future drops. If not look at as a way of population control.

Why not just stop jumping out of airplanes around the base !

If the navy wants the airport moved, they should pay for it and compensate the city for all the trouble it has put the residents through for the past decade. If the navy has $100,000,000 to pay for an undersea warfare range, they can drop a few bucks for a new airport. And, with all the hand wringing about sequestration, maybe they should just drop their undersea warfare plans and use the money to pay for the some of the inevitable cuts the military is going to have go make to help reduce the deficit. Or is that too big of a sacred cow for the navy to give up? The haven't even explained why we need the undersea warfare range. Maybe if the economy was better, it could be justified but not now. Time to ask them to make some sacrifices. The city of St. Marys needs to focus on real problems like paying down its debt, lowering water bills, getting rid of the Gilman property it should have never bought in the first place and saving struggling businesses. The airport is and always has been a smoke screen to distract voters from the real issues.
