So you went on Google to find out what a regressive tax is. Then you might have said it is unfair to the little guy.

An increase in sales tax would be more fair to all than the current IRS system because all would pay on consumption. Business owners would be more likely to invest in their businesses.

Just as I thought.
Without a very special provision of The Fair Tax, it would in fact be an extremely regressive tax. Why don't you explain to the folks what that provison is and how it works, Church Lady? |

Have any other Topix readers actualy read "The Fair Tax?"
I'm not talking about a generic fair tax, but "THE FAIR TAX" by John Linder and Neal Boortz. |

Dear Knee Jerk, If THE Fair Tax were adopted, ALL other federal taxes AND the IRS would disappear. Read the book. It's readily available in paperback. |

Here you go.
http://www.amazon.com/Fair-Tax-Book-Saying-Go... Can you imagine a forum where 90% of participants actually knew what in-the-hell they were talking about as opposed to the inverse status quo? |

A regressive tax is said to be unfair to the little guy. Seems like nothing is fair these days. What is your perspective? Why is paying a 10% consumption tax unfair? No one gets a break. No one gets deductions. Is it unfair for both the rich and poor to pay for milk? Is it unfair for the poor to pay the tax on a Kia and the rich a Maybach? Current free loaders would pay just as everyone else. |

Fairness and regressiveness are not really the same issues. If you enacted a flat tax without the provisions of THE Fair Tax, it would be exceedingly regressive. To replace the current revenue stream from income taxes, the rate is extimated to have to be between 17% and 20%. There is a helluva difference between the effect of paying 20% on food and clothing for a family just above the poverty level versus the tax on food and clothing for the same sized family in the upper quartile of income. However, THE Fair Tax is a flat tax which addresses that problem brilliantly. I'm still waiting on some of you tax authorities to tell me how that would work. Am I the only one on here who has actually READ The Fair Tax? |
