In a typically brilliant move, the St. Marys City Council decided to abandon over nine years of work and $400,000 investment in a plan to relocate the city's airport to Woodbine in favor tagging along with a nebulous scheme to build a spaceport on the old chemical plant property at Harriet's Bluff. Yesterday, NASA announced that the 15,000 foot runway and launch facilities at Cape Canaveral will be made available for rent to private space exploration companies. This announcement, the fact that construction of a comparable facility would cost, at a minimum, $200 million, and the proximity (approximately seven miles) of the Harriet's Bluff site to the Kings Bay Sub Base should be convincing proof that this is just another development dream that will never come to fruition.

Are you saying that general aviation will or will not be able to use the runway at this pie in the sky spaceport.

Your post is not clear to me.

The existing airport is no more of a danger to Kings Bay than that one would be.

The city council is currently under the impression that the pie in the sky spaceport will also operate as the St. Marys Airport for general aviation use. I don't know if this would or would not be an option.

The highlight of a casual drive through St. Marys is the countless empty stores, offices, and even entire strip centers that sit vacant. The owners cling to the property paying the taxes every year hoping one day they’ll strike it rich. St. Marys tourism doesn't exist because there’s nothing to tour. So called attractions include a broken down submarine museum, a few old homes, a ride around town to see the garbage piled curbside in a glorified golf cart, a so called film museum (where is it?), and the Cumberland Island Seashore Museum (is it ever open?). The tourism web site is hardly ever updated and contains destinations which don’t exist anymore. Before we forget, there is the Gilman Waterfront Park with the “Duckbill Pavilion” and the Ferry that takes visitors AWAY from St. Marys. And shopping in downtown St Marys is limited to less than a dozen businesses, the majority of which are closed on weekends. The wish that the quaint little city by the river will become as appealing as historic Fernandina are dreams from a pipe whose tobacco has burned down to ash. The leadership (term used loosely) for the past twenty five years (since the paper mill propped up the city) doesn't have a clue. They should have built that bridge to Fernandina many years ago. At least visitors wouldn't have to drive all the way from I-95 to reach the dead end.

Everything you say is true with the exception of being like Fernandina. The real estate cartel plans were to make St. Mary a sister of St. Simon and Jekyll Island. They were blind to their own cardinal rule of location, location and location.

The reality is that this area is a suburb of jax and will never be anything more. Gnats/swamp and crappy weird weather (when it's nice enough to enjoy the outside the gnats are out). make it unattractive as a retirement area. letting real estate types that grab any idea that they think will inflate values and run with it be the driving force behind city council decisions is idiotic. Determine a balance of taxes and services based on realistic assesments of the population and not on pipe dreams sold by snake oil salesmen.

Sadly, in the instance of the dream spaceport, the snake oil salesman is David Keating, our over paid directer of Joint Development. Keating never met a grandiose shady development scheme he didn't fall in love with.

I thought I read that his sorry ass was fired. Don't tell me that we still pay him. It's like paying a farmer to not plant wheat.

We use to have a prblem with smoke from the paper mill, but it was making money and jobs. Now we have a problem with the City Council blowing smoke up our rears. Now we have a vacant paper mill site on the water and they can't get any intrest in that, but they spend time on the Sea Island airport project and screwing up a plan that would have had the Dock House property producintg income and taxes. Then there was the pipe dream of a little theater in the Park. They put a dead beat wife abuser in charge of that and were holding a love feast on that venture. It goes on and on. We have our on fiscal cliff and damn fools are pushing us over it. May be the movie site location bunch can get some interest in a ghost town site that is ready made.

All that bunch can develope is a fiscal cliff for us. The lack of leaderhip is not going to cease nor or the problems. The tax payer is being abused on a daily basis. They have no rational plans for running a business they have run into the ground. They creat the problem and then want to solve the problem they created with no rational plan to resovle what they created. Problem solvers are problem creators. Next we will have committees to set up committees. All they do is shift the problem to some committee with no authority. All the committee does is report back to those with the authority. Just a shell game of avoidance and delay. No acceptance for their malfeasance, misfeasance, abuse of trust and oath of office. Of course they have the St.Simons part time attorney with a golden parachute of hunderes of thousands of dollars to assist. Another problem creator by the inept council.
