None of the above. Yes, I spend "serious time" in Montague County, I live here and I am very concerned with what is going on in Montague County.

Finally someone who sees that there is a serious problem at the Montague County S.O.!! Besides the vehicle problem and the captain who will not get out from behind the desk except to smoke .... let's talk about staff who have arrest records! This is the same staff that is allowed in the secure areas of the jail and has acess to confidential information. Where is the 24 hour patrol? The only time I see our deputies out in the community is going to their shift, going to lunch, and going home from their shift. They also drive those county vehicles like they are NASCAR vehicles!! Everytime I drive by the jail, county vehicles are in driveway with the hood up! All that extra wear and tear from the commute to the Metroplex, plus all the deer that the deputies seem to hitting!
<quoted text>
Exactly how many deer have they hit?

When you hear that there are "certain people/families" that you don't 'bother', if you are hired as a deputy, in Montague county, what are you supposed to think? As for getting anything done out here, forget it. They can't find a thief with him standing in front of them. As for questioning.....what a joke. Stolen items were pawned, by one of the two, and Nothing was done! Law Enforcement in Montague county? Where, who, when? Montague Co. is known as the major drug run, mfg.doorway, into Texas, by the druggies, therapists, and any law enforcement worth their salt, BUT do you see anything being done? Nah! Too much trouble. Our dear sheriff went out on an accident (hit and run). He found out who the person was. He had had a bad day, and did not want to look into the situation. He left it up to the Dept.of Public Safety to take care of. WHAT the HELL are my taxes paying for?

If you really want Montague County Law Enforcement investigated go to the FBI site and file and online complaint. You can also file online complaints with the ACLU. American Civil Liberities union. The Attorney Generals Office also takes complaints. They have to be in writing. I know, I have filed with all 3. The more complaints they get the quicker they check it out, especially the FBI.

I also care for Montague county very much as I have lived here for 27 years. I went to the Commissioners Court meeting this morning as I do on every 2nd and 4th monday of the month. Unless you get involved as I have then you don't really know what is going on. The newspapers are very one sided and I would like to clean house. It took almost a full year for the S.O. to get the computer system going again. I listen to my scanner and yes we do have 24 hour patrol. Everything has risen in price since 2 years ago except the budget for him. I will stay in there and fight for my Sheriff office as I see and hear what you don't since you don't care enough to go the meetings. It's hard when you have 4 county commissioners and a judge that only want to tear down the S.O. as they don't run it anymore, Sheriff Keating does and when the new year gets here with the new judge maybe a few things will get straightened out. Instead of listening to gossip, come to the meetings and I know you will be glad you did. See you there

Montague County needs a web page like Wise County or Denton County. All the information is listed online. You can check out the sheriff, the inmates, charges, warrants, court dates, inmate mug shots, sex offenders, all charges are listed. They have Amber Alerts, Animal Services, Honor Guard, K9, Patrol, County Officials, to many to list. All services or online and everything is in one place.

That program your talking about is called the MILITARY.
The Military does not take felons, which if you are charged with drugs you now have a felony charge against you. If convicted you are a felon. Look it up'

I been to several of those meetings and you're right they don't run it anymore. I believe it will only get better with Judge Winn, our new D.A. and Sheriff Keating working as a team. We still have some work to do with a few of those commissioners.

As a former Deputy Sheriff in Montague County from Sheriff C.R. Whatley's time, most problems addressed by several person here are correct. Problems do arise with overcontrol of the commisioner's court at times, pay is a serious issue because you are so close the the metroplex where good qualified officers can get a much higher pay rate for 8 hour shifts, and moral with working the long hours and days can also be a problem. Lower qualified officers put more work on the good ones, who in turn become burnt out. It is
without a doubt a waste of taxpayer money if this new sheriff has people living out of county driving patrol cars out of county for personal business. I know no person in that office now, however, from 20 years ago, we worked large numbers of narcotics cases and theft cases down there and scored some pretty good convictions. Your "new" DA is one of the best most through DA's I ever worked with, and the only problem with Jack, will be in the quality of cases you bring into his office. You have to know how to gather the evidence to make good cases and if you don't, your just out driving around looking busy. Good quality deputies cost money, and right now, Montague just does not pay enough for the right quality. Sheriff Whatley was able to keep a top flight staff because he cared about everything going on and got personally involved, was highly educated and required the same from his staff, however over time, hiring and turnover became a problem for him too.

Could be because what Montague County has is what the news is now calling Gypsy Cops. They have been fired from other jobs for breaking laws and using excessive force, drinking and drug use, perhaps even child molestation.

In regards to the Montague County Sheriff Pay Raises, I feel that the following issues need to be addressed:
During Mr. Keating's campaign, he stated that he would be able to run the department on its current budget or less while offering the citizens of Montague County 24 hour patrol. So, why is Sheriff Keating already in need of a 50% budget increase for his second year in office? Will he start the 24 hour patrol when he gets his budget increase? The citizens thought he would be able to offer that at the beginning of his term in January of 2005.
Sheriff Keating also asked for money for new vehicles and gas allowance. He might be able to pay his staff better if he was not allowing them to drive county vehicles to their homes outside of the County, some as far as the Hurst, Euless, Bedford area of Tarrant County. Citizens have spotted these vehicles being driven on I-35 South in Fort Worth on numerous occasions. Since gas prices are at 2.90 a gallon, I am sure that this kind of mileage is taking a toll on the budget, not including the wear and tear on the vehicles. The Sheriff might also need to be questioned about how many county vehicles have been wrecked during his term and that no other county employess are allowed to smoke in their county vehicles, but Sheriff office employees can.
I believe that on last night's newcast, Deputy Lance Provost and Sheriff Keating both said that a 5 percent raise was not enough to pay for gas to drive to work. Well, the county furnishes the gas for the county vehicles which they drive to home and to work, so 5 percent should be plenty for them.
Yes, Montague County Sheriff's Office has had a large turn over of staff since Sheriff Keating took office, however it is really due to pay or due to working conditions? The citizens of Montague County saw staff turn over during Chris Hamilton's term as Sheriff, but not at this rate! It would be interesting to see exactly how many employees have come and gone.
Can Sheriff Keating justify his own pay raise of 15%? Citizens of Montague would also like to know just how many drug busts or any arrests has the Sheriff's office made since January of 2005?
I feel that the news needs to check on these facts.... not just listen to our promise breaking Sheriff!
thank you...This is one of the most interesting postings I have read concerning a sheriff and his spending of the communities money.

I agree it is absurd that your county allows him to let deputies drive home vehicles, which also end up out of the area.

to recruit and retain sheriff staff:

Recruit with limited funds in other states by
using newspapers, etc. California has a
different retirement system, and you may be
able to get their retirees who still want to
work. You solve your problem. They will
not require high wages, they have experience,
and they require medical benefits which they do
not normally receive when retired; but are too
young for social security. Many of our agencies
allow their cops to retire at age 50.

Good luck.

Current article in The Bowie News about using county property for personal use. Looks like there is going to be some changes in how the commissioners use their pickups and make them account for useage to the IRS or park them on county property when not being used for county business. This should also extend to the Sheriff's dept. in my opinion.

maybe the good Lord will let the county work together as a team if they would remember the reason they are there and share the word and joy of the Lord without the people of the county trying to get it done.

i mean like getting the Bibles out of storage and put them where the inmates have access to them if they want them. start having church for the inmates that want to attend, stop trying to break up the Bible studies that are going on now in the jail.

I pray that this matter will be taken care of

Drugs are taking over the entire N TX.counties.
This county is full of do nothing druggies. We need the draft back and put these California transplant Gangs on a bus home and off the streets of St Jo.
We have sorry people worring about the Wind Mills while the important things go uncared for.
I wish they would open their eyes and see what is only a few blocks away from them. Sex, Drugs and theft! Thst is ehst we reslly need need more new people here in town. We need people who work at real jobs. Not ssi checks going for drugs.
