My kids going to Zachary I want them to be able to take p.e., music, and band as a child! Heard West Feliciana not offering that lol!

Hmmm I think that is strange too. My kids go to another school district and we still have all the enrichment classes.

Zachary is way better off financially due to the amoun of sales taxes and property taxes they take in....a $175,000 home in Zachary with homestead pays something like $1,140 in west fel that same house would only pay $800.

Why is that? Do west fel households realize they are getting a break with paying less taxes which does affect their public school?

It's not funny. Our children lost arts programs and teachers lost jobs. How is this funny to you.

Parenting fail at it's worst and the parent is from Zachary. I hope you teach your kids better empathy than that.

This statement needs to be realized by everyone who lives in west Feliciana parish.

I don't live in west fel nor Zachary but figured I would give my taxes information. My house value is 170,000. After homestead I pay 1015.00 in taxes. Curious as to what others pay in other parishes.

I hope your children are getting a better education than the level reflected in your headline. We would laugh at you if we were like you. We are proud of our school system's academic record and many of us realize, as Sarah eloquently points out above, only additioal revenue would enable us to compete with larger districts in enrichment programs.

The millage rate in Zachary is higher, thus they pay more taxes. With that said not all of the taxes goes to the school, but the vast majority if the taxes do, at one time I think Zachary school system was collecting twice the mills than West Fel, this was before the new mill passed back in '10 mind you.

Add in the fact that they have a larger tax base with all the development, and collect at least double what we do in sales tax, plus a growing enrollment that increases what they collect from the state and Feds and there you have it. I school district with money money to burn.

People in West Feliciana needs to wake up, if we don't start to welcome and in courage growth along the 61 corridor , our problems are going to get worst.

I might sound harsh with what I am about to say but so be it. Yes it is sad PE is gone. Yes it is said Music is gone. There is NOTHING you can do about it. Instead of giving it so much headspace on what the school doesn't have. Come up with alternatives. Sign your child up for a sports program. Get outside and play with your child more so they get the exercise. Hire a music teacher for private lessons. I am sure some parents will say well I can't afford that. My statement back is then why did you have kids? If you care so much about music you should be able to make it happen for your kids. If you care so much about PE then get outside and get moving with your kids. Also, you could move to an area that has schools with these programs. If you can not do any of those options then you should have been better prepared to have kids. Life happens. It's how you are able to roll with it that makes you a person who doesn't just complain about it.

You would be paying $760 on your home in West Fel for what's it worth...the rub is trying to find a home for sale at a $170,000. Still very much a seller's market in West Fel, you won't get much of a home for that price. Maybe a 1500 square foot home in a old subdivision.

Oh wow. My home is 6 years old and in a 6 year old subdivison. 2300 sq feet with 1900 living area. We are also a rural area and in the top ten school districts. The catch is the size of my parish. HUGE so more of a chance for revenue than west Feliciana.

Honestly Bridget, I somewhat agree with you. It sucks that the programs want be offered anymore at the lower levels, but they are still recieving a quality education and parents can expose their children to the arts and athletics after school hours and on the weekends.

Given a chioce I would love to have kept the programs, it sucks that they had to them. I would of prefered them to make cuts in other areas like in the central office an keep the programs but they didn't. Perhaps thy wasn't even a possibility? Who knows?

Hopefully things will change in the near future.

Very strange that Go Broncos gets off on something hurting a child's education. Laughing about this matter shows your stupidity lol.

Well...not fast on that...we are still top school, we are still receiving a lot of money from Energy (though that well is depleting every year ), houses are being built (thought at a slow rate), real estate market is good, and we have/are seeing some commercial development trickle in.

The sky isn't falling yet...this ship can easily be turned around.

On another note, are you Claude?

Wtf is wrong with you? The fact that we can do equally as well as Zachary with way less should say something about the quality of west fel teachers, school system, and staff. I know plenty of teachers in Zachary and trust me, it's not all its cracked up to be. Wouldn't trade my job in west fel for a job in Zachary at all.
