John Cobb's Mother-in-Law Pleads No Contest

There are 10 comments on the The Daily Advertiser story from Mar 9, 2012, titled John Cobb's Mother-in-Law Pleads No Contest. In it, The Daily Advertiser reports that:

The mother-in-law of former West Feliciana Parish Police Juror John Cobb has pleaded no contest to felony theft in a case also involving Cobb and his wife.

District Attorney Sam D'Aquilla tells The Advocate 69-year-old Louisa P. Jones of Weyanoke entered the plea Thursday before state District Judge William G. Carmichael.

Carmichael ordered a pre-sentence investigation and set sentencing for June 7, the district attorney said

.

Jones' plea was to theft of an amount between $500 and $1,500, also referred to as "relative felony theft," D'Aquilla said.

"It's still a felony," the district attorney said.

State Police arrested Cobb, Jones, Cobb's wife, Clinton minister George Veal, former East Feliciana School Board member Oliver Wingfield and two contractors in an alleged scheme to divert funds from a nonprofit organization to private hands.

Wingfield and the contractors, John B. Perry and David Deloach, of East Feliciana Parish, also settled their cases with various pleas last year.

Veal and Wingfield were officials in a defunct nonprofit organization, Feliciana Enrichment Center in Clinton.

The group's building burned to the ground in August 2008, and Wingfield, Veal and the Cobbs are accused of diverting $80,000 from a fire insurance policy to private hands by funneling it through the Union Bethel Family Church, of Weyanoke.

In announcing the arrests in 2010, State Police said a nonprofit's money can be given only to another nonprofit organization, but investigators said the defendants entered into an elaborate check-cashing scheme to move the money out of the church.

John Cobb and Jones were scheduled for trial March 19, but D'Aquilla said Cobb's trial may be delayed until the summer because a report from a handwriting expert has not been received.

Cobb, who was defeated for re-election, is charged with three felony theft counts, five forgery counts and one count of criminal conspiracy.

Veal's trial is scheduled in October, D'Aquilla said.

This was brought about by church members who felt money was being taken from the actual church funds. They said that the entire Cobb family took a trip to Hawaii with the money taken from the church. What happened to those charges? It appears that the investigation into that small claim resultied in the discovery of the check cashing scheme. They were just so close with getting away with this scheme.

This happened over 3 years ago. Cobb hasn't even been to trial yet. With this type of felony trial, will there be prison time for the poor mother in law?

"poor mother in law"? She pleaded no contest to stealing money from her own church!

How often does this sort of thing happen? How did the authorities even discover that the money was swapping hands like that?? I guess if the pastor would have not been a member of the Sheriff's office, nothing would have happened. It would be nice if there was an investigation into what went on at the Police Jury office while Cobb was a juror. There were a lot of checks being written to false LLCs. There was probably nothing criminal like this but.. how much money was paid to contractors with nothing to show for it. I guess since he and most of his coharts at the PJ office are now gone, nothing will be investigated.

If checks were writing to false LLC's it would of came out when they got audited.

This was not brought out by the audit. It was admitted to by the man claiming to have the LLC after he was found out by the jurors. There is a reason the parish had so many deficiencies pointed out by the Legislative Auditors.

Since getting arrested the Cobbs have really worked hard Ion the church building. I guess that will count for something when he goes to trial.

When is this trial scheduled? Can he plead down and save the trouble of a trial?
