Rod and I are 1 year apart in age. When he was in his teens he was considered an egotistical ass by his peers. It appears he remains the same today.

Both are well worth the short time it takes to read.

I bought the book. I read it. It is obvious that the book is not about his sister. She was nothing more than a vehicle which allowed Mr. Dreher to expound on his personal beliefs and philosophy. The literary value of this little book is greatly overshadowed by the author's giant ego. My rating? Save your money.

Perhaps the intellect of many St. Francisville residents are not nearly so neolithic as Mr. Dreher has inferred.

So I guessing, Jenny, that you don't think the book was worth a $1 million advance from the publisher?

From what I'm reading on his blog now, Dreher's swearing to start shooting his neighbors' cats to protect his new illegal city chickens. What kind of person moves into a neighborhood and just decides he's the new sheriff in town and the old rules don't apply to him? Kinda sad if you ask me.

But maybe you still have time to send your cat to stay at her mother's before Dreher kills it. Mr. Small Town's off on another jet setting fling to his beloved Amsterdam to "taste" things.

Just look at him...spiked hair, owl-like glasses, both of which scream out "look at me. Look at me." And when you do look at him you see a very insecure young man seeking his own identity. I feel for Mr. Dreher. I feel that he could benefit from professional assistance to overcome his facade of intellectual proficiency and superiority. What a self-serving dork.

Yes, you can feel bad for Mr. Dreher, but we are feeling even worse for Mrs. Dreher over on this Legal Cat vs. Illegal Chickens post:

A request has been made by my friend Keith for someone from St. Francisville to review Ray Dreher, Jr.'s book "Little Way of Ruthie Leming".
Keith wrote:
Pauli's review is pretty in-depth but the review of TLWORL I'd REALLY like to read would be one written by some fearless long time resident of St. Francisville who could offer his own independent and authoritative account of all these Drehery facts and issues, someone not intimidated by Dreher's hiding behind his sister's death as a shield against criticism. Cause we all know from past history that a bunch of what he says is almost certainly bogus, but we just don't know exactly which factoids have been compromised in which particular ways.

We're having a good time again discussing Ray Dreher, Jr.'s propensities and idiosyncrasies. The latest drama appears to be fear of a rat snake in the garage.

Re "It's All About Me" Rod: Let's see: he left because schools were not good enough for him, jobs were not good enough for him, food was not good enough for him, churches were not good enough for him, people were not good enough for him, local government was not good enough for him. Explain why he came back? Million dollar book advance? To resurrect racial tensions and stir up trouble to get subjects scintillating to the northeast readers of his interminable blogs? To make neighbors look like dumbass country bumpkins for the entertainment of his highbrow buddies? How long, O Lord???

He left for some 20 years and came back to capitalize. Google him and look at the "wake" he left behind in Dallas, Philadelphia,.... By his latest community journalism, he probably wont be here long. Below, taken from an article:
"Rod Dreher, one-time resident bigot at The Dallas Morning News, now serves as director of publications for the conservative John Templeton Foundation — or at least he did the last time we checked.
Dreher is also editor of the foundation’s Big Questions Online website. But Instant Tea reader Kip Sherling points us to Dreher’s announcement Friday that he has stopped blogging (“I hope to be blogging again s0on,” Dreher writes) and halted all reader comments on BQO.
Here’s Sherling’s take, sent under the subject line,“Karma’s a bitch for master culture baiter Dreher”:
Rod Dreher, who earlier this year tried to wrap the lips of his anti-anything-not-Dreher blogging needs around the John Templeton Foundation’s bottomless nipple, appears to have been rudely weaned.
In the last several days, Templeton has deleted most of Dreher’s most politically and culturally contentious posts while suspending both Dreher’s personal blog as well as comments site-wide at his Big Questions Online.
The sulking tone with which Dreher announced this administrative punishment online underwrites what many suspect, that Dreher’s habitual just-about-anything-baiting style has put him close in line for promotion to becoming Templeton’s next ex-editor and the first failed editor of its online adventure BQO.
What mystifies many, though, is why a multi-million dollar tax exempt foundation, which depends for its tax-exempt status on at least the appearance of its political neutrality and tries to position itself as a salon of lofty, highly civilized ideas savored by the Nobel Committee and the Vatican alike, would not want as its very vocal public face a gutter gay-baiter from the Rupert Murdoch school of tainted meat journalism. Whatever happens, this final betrayal of what, to Dreher, must surely have seemed at first blush true institutional love forged in Heaven, may forever remain a mystery.
If Sherling is right, let’s just pray The DMN doesn’t take Dreher back."
Seems he has left at trail of these wherever he lived. Shame is he really knows nothing about "community", and only tries how to capitalize on his narcissism.

Wow, sure is a lot of judging, hatefulness and down right cruelty going on here. No wonder there's such an epidemic of bullying. The kids are just emulating their parents.

These posts are beyond rude! Why do you folks posting such hatred insist he wrote this book to make fun of you and the people in this town? I would imagine telling such an honest, raw story would have been very difficult for him. The book is getting rave reviews and help put this town in a good light with a true spirit of community. The person who writes that horrible blog about Rod is an out and out bully and is obviously eaten up with hatred and jealousy. What in the world ever happened to compassion? Surely, we can all agree to live by the golden rule? Good grief.
