This ranks up with Aquarium

Two skateparks 360 SkateSpot in Willow Grove and Title 10 on Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia have closed in the Philadelphia region in the past two months, and a third the Vans Skatepark in the Moorestown Mall is expected to close within the year. Others, including Cheapskates in Line Lexington (south of Souderton), Bucks County, and Boards and Blades in Boothwyn, Delaware County, were casualties in recent years.

A slowdown

Skateboarding has suffered a serious drop in participation, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association. The Florida-based group, which tracks national participation in more than 100 sports, found that skateboarding participation dropped from 13 million in 2002 to 11.1 million last year.

The slowdown comes at a time when, ironically, Philadelphia government appears headed for a showdown with skateboarders over LOVE Park.

DC Shoes, the nation's biggest skateboarding shoe manufacturer, announced last week it will give the city $1 million over 10 years to pay for future skateboard damage to the fabled boarding venue if the city reopens it to skateboarding, which was banned there two years ago.

The mayor and managing director rebuffed the money, saying they'll never let skateboarders return to LOVE Park.

Is the sport that a decade ago helped launch ESPN's popular X-Games held in Philadelphia for two straight years dying? Are skaters bypassing their boards and opting instead for basketball or bowling?

Skate Park
Spend my tax money on something else.Last thing we need is this.aren't we facing a 2m dollar deficit and the city wants this in? I agree with above this is a "stupid" idea. Not sure what "aquarium" means? Please .This would cost someone the election loser for those who vote for it.Not a good use of city money.Who's using this for their election anyways.?

Cops are busy enough in this city.Maybe more can be hired to police this new area? That would be fine by me

Consider the source just look who is in favor of the skate board and aquarium, two losers, one is grabbing at straws and will accept any position to be noticed for her future consideration for a council run where she will fold and another attorney idiot that starts at the top and will settle for peanuts and they both hold each others hands. They are also great at lying to everyone about every issue they come in contact with.(Caution, Caution on both)

Some of you may remember that years ago in the 1960's and 70's slotcar racing was a big thing. If you had the larger cars and not the H.O. versions, you had to go to a place that had a track to race it. Did the city build a slotcar track for the kids back then? No. Did the city offer property or a building for donators to open a track at? No. Instead businessmen opened up there own places. They saw it as a way of making money. If I remember correctly one was called "House of Racing" and it was located in a building near Gilbert's Hardware. Yes it's no longer there and neither is the hobby. But the city lost nothing. Who's to say that the skateboarding hobby won't slowly go away as well?

If the current supporters of a skateboard park feel one is needed so badly, then here's your chance to open up your own business. Buy or rent one of those empty buildings on Harper and make it into a year-round facility. You could also sell skateboards, clothing, helmets, pads and other related stuff there too.

I saw Jack speeding down harper on A skate board. I think he was coming from Crane's Bar because he was weaving between cars and A hot blonde was on the back.

I'm not old enough to remember the slot car places but what you say makes sense.

The only way you can get your money back if you sent a check into the city with a memo on it stating it be used for the skate park. If you gave cash you are out of luck. I wonder where all the money that Maria has collected has gone?? Is she holding on to it?

Didn't the whole skate park discussion start at a council meeting? If yes, then perhaps someone should bring up the question about the money during audience participation at the next council meeting. Get the opinion of the City Attorney and then see what the mayor and council say.

I have heard rumors to that effect. I was in the company of other girls when she was asked how much the skateboard committee had in their bank account and she couldn't give an accurate accounting sounds kind of strange especially when you are the person supposedly incharged of this project. Lets not fall into the hands of yet another gimmick source.

I also have been instructed that she has tried to join forces with the hockey association through the efforts of the Parks and Recreation Director, one never knows these days.

We agree with you as residents near Kyte Monroe Field. This is a quiet neighborhood with mostly retired residents and we don't need to have outsiders using this facility and all the mess that they bring to our city. I'm sure if they build a skateboard complex our condo association fee's will triple do to the garbage that they leave behind and the damage that will occur.
