Decided to post this here, because more folks log in here than South Elgin. Folks Beware: South Elgin Police are really bad news. They'll ticket you for anything! For 36 in a 35. If you're doing 34 they'll ticket you for obstructing traffic.

If you report a crime to them they won't assist unless one of their friends or somebody high up the corporate ladder were the victims. I can go on and on, but will stay clear of South Elgin unless I absolutely have to do business there.

I agree South Elgin is Kane County's most corrupt. For Du Page County it's Glen Ellyn and for Cook County the Norridge Police take the cake. I think Norridge has the worst police department in the country. They are totally inept except of course when it comes to handing out traffic tickets.

I don't live in Norridge but in 20 years of driving my only three traffic tickets are ALL from Norridge!

As for South Elgin, I've only been there once. Got lost and asked an officer in a parked police car for directions. He not only refused but was rude beyond belief!

I will make it my business to avoid these two towns in the future.

As for Glen Ellyn I have never been there but heard the cops are real friendly to the drug dealers there. Figures.

Slow down on Sterns Road going west near Rt. 31. That is one of South Elgin's favorite speed traps!

I live in South Elgin, they may be strict, but they are fair upholding the law. I appreciate their work keeping this town safe.

I wonder if the posters claiming S. Elgin is corrupt understand the difference between slander and libel. The defense is if what they are saying is true. But accusations alone don't make it true. Where is the evidence? If there is evidence report it to the Better Government Association (Andy Shaw) and that staff will investigate it. Fortunately most people know to discount the comments from flame throwers on the internet

I called the s elgin police today because I had some idiot driving crazy and darned near killed me. officer aggressive came to best buy nasty as hell as if I were a criminal. I am a 45 year old woman and he demanded my DL!! Zig heil. I told him no I would not deal with him and he put his hands on me. He grabbed my pocketbook and tried to get my wallet out. Since WHEN are cops allowed to put their hands on you when you are the one reporting a crime? he then sends me to my car like a bad dog and tells me I probably made it up. Right because the jackass who was driving was likely this guys pal or brother. They do not want to take reports about their own officers and know about all kinds of drug dealings etc and do nothing about it. South Elgin gives IL is reputation to the hilt.

Yes this is a fact , I lived here and I experienced first hand. What a waste of tax payer dollar . Wake up America the day will come were all of your rights will be stripped away . You are not free you are being groomed so that you can expect this kind of behavior by your local authorities. When was the last time you felt safe around one of these harassing clowns. The criminals have more rights than a law abiding citizen that wants to report a crime , only to find out this criminal gets special treatment from the locals. Demand the protection & respect you pay for. Vote for the right public officials. Some of these CRIMINALS IN UNIFORM make well over 75k a year to do nothing but collect a fat pension and keep harassing the public they swore to protect. WAKE UP !!!!!! Its our lack of conviction to a true free society that has placed all of us in the position that we are in now.

I have lived in South Elgin for over 20 years. Because of their tactics and ticket happy demeanor, I now believe that their mission is to "Harass and Collect" rather than to "Serve and Protect"!

I have never had a negative attitude toward police officers until I have experienced the officers of the South Elgin Police Department.

It is a disgusting shame that we have to put up with them. I do not usually speak against people, but someone with money and power would do justice by challenging some of their behavior.

Where is the trap? Stearns rd is 45 mph the whole length, with multiple speed limit signs. Due to Stearns rd having curbs, KDOT would not have a higher speed limit. As a matter of fact, no tickets have been issued under 55 mph.

South Elgin DUI guilty plea stands despite officer's policy violation
By Harry Hitzeman
A South Elgin cop who arrested a 22-year-old man in September 2012 on DUI charges violated departmental policy when he recommended to the man’s mom that her son use a certain defense attorney.

Officer Bryan Kmieciak gave the mother of Travis Eubanks a pen with defense attorney Todd Cohen’s name on it, she testified Tuesday.

“He held the pen by the tip and said ‘Here is an attorney that I recommend,” said Margaret Eubanks, who went to the police station to get an insurance card to retrieve her SUV when she encountered Kmieciak in the parking lot.“He said if I were in Travis’ situation, he would talk to this attorney.”

She replied that the family usually uses attorney Garrett Malcolm, but Kmieciak discouraged it, saying Malcolm was “rude and unprofessional,” she testified.

Her testimony came during a hearing in which Travis Eubanks asked a judge to undo his DUI guilty plea and set the case back to square one.

Eubanks, of the 300 block of Juniper Court, hired Malcolm in the DUI case. Eubanks testified he felt fear of retribution, so he pleaded guilty at his first court appearance on Oct. 1, 2012.

“I was afraid I’d get in trouble for no reason,” he said.

Defense attorney Kathleen Colton argued the case because Malcolm also was called as a witness.“It’s clear what occurred here,” Colton said.“The officer was trying to steer Mr.(Travis) Eubanks, through his parents, to an attorney.”

In the end, Judge Thomas Stanfa sided with Kane County prosecutors, who did not call any witnesses in the hearing.

“People are nervous when they come to court. If it turns into paranoia, that’s something different. But it’s not an objective standard,” Stanfa said, noting that he clearly explained Eubanks all of his rights.

Eubanks, now 23, testified that he visited Cohen shortly after his arrest, but felt uncomfortable when Cohen said he was “good friends” with Kmieciak and played on the same softball team as him.

Eubanks pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI on Oct. 2, 2012, was fined $1,635, ordered to attend a victim impact panel, and given 100 days of an alcohol monitoring bracelet in exchange for prosecutors lifting the suspension on his license.

Malcolm also testified that Eubanks was “unusually jumpy” at the court appearance last October. Malcolm acknowledged he could have stopped his client and didn’t review a DVD of the arrest or the officer’s report until after the guilty plea.

“You have no substance,” argued Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Joe Cullen, who noted Eubanks’ blood alcohol concentration was .16, which is twice the legal limit.“It all comes down to he was afraid in some vague way because a police officer gave his mother a pen with an attorney’s name on it and said he was a good attorney.”

Cohen did not return a phone message. Kmieciak was at the hearing and declined to comment afterward.

South Elgin Police Chief Chris Merritt said the department policy prohibits what Kmieciak did.

Merritt declined to comment on what, if any, disciplinary action was taken against Kmieciak.

There are several ways in which the Elgin Police Department - POLICE OFFICERS - are corrupted! Growing up we learn 911 stranger danger - We want to believe that police officers are doing some good, making the streets safer, filing reports. FAR FROM THE TRUTH! When did we have to become afraid of the police?? It seems when WE need help, when we file an emergency protection order, or to make it simple when our lives are actually at risk.. Where are they?!
I am a female-woman, who I'm sure is not the first to be treated with such utter disgust, misconduct ( I will leave it at that - as I would not want to slander) however; we all know the truth. I know first hand the corruption, sadly but I have fought a battle it seems like. Several years ago I went through a very traumatic event, sexual assault/rape ect. the point being : The police were suppose to protect me, to assure the restraining order - TO SENTENCE for the crime- I SPENT MONTHS AND MONTHS YEARS WITH THESE "POLICE OFFICERS" TRYING just to feel safe again, to see how an affense such as rape is some how only one - two years?!! They could have cared less, looking at us as if we are the crazy one's. Mainly; recently for the first time I saw how they handle young females when they arrest- the corruption the language violations - I would rather not EVER go to the police for help. scary part it - they can do what they want and always will get away with it! why?! becauswe they fill the report out! depending on THERE MOOD OR ATTRACTION?! OR THEY WILL MAKE SURE THE REPORT IS IN THERE FAVOR- HOW ELSE DO SOME PEOPLE MOLEST CHILDREN AND GET 4 YEARS AS OTHERS GET 10?! THE OFFICERS- SADLY FOR WOMAN I DONT THINK JAIL IS THE SAFEST PLACE, BUT EVEN SADDER - NOT THE OTHER INMATES IT MAY BE THE ONES WITH TOO MUCH AUTHORITY, WE ARE SO AFRAID OF BEING ASSAULTED, RAPED- LOOK AT THE RAPE PERCENTAGES IN JAIL?! THIS WORLD IS CERTAINLY A SAD PLACE WHEN WE have to admit and know our fate generally does not matter on the actually crime or time "by law" but our fate is in the hands of the corrupted. one person an officer becides our fate.

Getting a ticket in south Elgin means the police are doing their jobs. We had a store robbed we go to often and the robber had a gun. He was captured within a few days by our great police department in south Elgin. Just slow down when going through our town, it's as easy as that.

I've had no experience bad or good with South Elgin police. But will say that Internal Affairs is less than adequate. Police Departments all across the Chicagoland area have taken liberties against people that have crossed the line. My worst experience was with the Glen Ellyn police who took the liberty of roughing me up a little because I dared to argue with a personal friend of their's who was a loud mouthed drug dealer who woke up half the neighborhood arguing at the top of his lungs with his girlfriend.

If you got a ticket for doing 36 in a 35 wouldn't you be upset? Just saying....
