Businesses: Booze tax will hurt state

Full story: Brattleboro Reformer

Extending Vermont's 6 percent sales tax to hard liquor could drive customers to New Hampshire, where they might shop for more than just spirits, a state official and business owners say.

I have felt for some time that this would be a excellent idea--perhaps even discourage our youth from drinking. Instead if continously raising tobacco taxes it's about time that this is happening--there are FAR more alcoholics in Vermont than smokers these day!

Pathetic. The only thing people cling to more hysterically than their guns is their booze.

As a booze drinker myself, this will not affect me. I already go to New Hampshire to purchase liquor, because it's already way cheaper than Vermont. Plus, Keene has a far better selection of single malt scotch than anywhere in the Brattleboro area.

Vermont. already, one of the highest taxing States
in the Country, is on another tax binge. No matter what your party affiliation, this is what usually happens when the Dems dominate the legislature.I'm sure there have been exceptions to the rule, but not this time....

i dont go to the bars or drink much ,but the biggest bunch of crap and most communist thing i ever saw our govterment do is to not allow smoking in a public bar wich is owned by a tax payer, i dont give a crap if you smoke or not ,if the guy owns a bar and he wants people to smoke or not it is his buisness nobody elses,i can see him having to warn people with a sighn but that is it
,just like a strip joint if you dont like what inside then stay to hell out,i dont bitch about what ya do in that church or any other place people go, next they will try to tell us what we can or cant do in our own homes, this is discusting, i can see having smoking laws in places like town hall or any govterment funded places but a private club come on people dont give up your rights

What is with the punitive tax mentality? How incredibly Stalinist of you.

The current crowd running the government show is trying to manipulate social behavior through legislation and taxation. Again, how incredibly Stalinist of them. What ever happened to Liberty and Freedom?

Their modus operandi is tax anything that will increase the tax base, which, as history has proven, creates the opposite effect.

It appears we are going to have dug quite a deep hole in the next few years. I sure hope our children are up to the task of paying for the abomination we are currently in.

The law was made because your "right" to smoke in a public bar was becoming a public health issue. Why should you have the right to negatively affect the health of other people?

hey ben its a privatly owned buisness why should the govterment have the right to control that, you have the right to not go into it if you dislike smoking, just as i have the right to stay out of a church or a store with porn or a store who sells meat if i am a animal lover,or a germ infested gym ,or a gun shop if i am one of those, but the bottom line is its a private buisness, people are not forced to go into such places, just as i feel a govterment has no right bailing a private buisness out, when we start to do these things we are starting to go back to what we fight against in other countrys.
if its a school, bus, govterment office, library or something of that nature so be it
people need to use them and they pay for them with there taxes so everyone has a right to go into them, but a private buisness is one step toward comunism

This only cause the drunken illegals to drive to NH and kill a few more east coast liberals. This is a great idea.

They have yet to ration crapping, but, they are working diligently on what you will be allowed to eat or drink, what kind of electrical items you will be allowed to have, what kind of car you will be allowed to drive, how much money you will be allowed to make, where your children will be allowed to go to school, what beliefs you are allowed to have, to what extent you will be allowed to defend yourself.....off the top of my head, these are just a few of the current onslaught of liberal marxism we are about to experience, some are here already. Welcome to Obama world.

btw, he has now come full circle to complete hypocracy. His spending is not sustainable....what do ya know?!?!?!

Its a public health issue for you to shove that damn double quarter/with cheese down your throat while driving to, but I don't see any laws on the books for that.... It's a fact, with the proper air make up unit installed in a public facility, there is no need for this law and the existing smoking-non smoking areas I have encountered, no one seems to be complaining.
To appease a few, your forcing tavern owners out of business because the majority of their customers smoke... Pennsylvania's new smoking ban does not apply to taverns and bars whose liquor sales exceed their food sales... That is the way it should be nationally to protect the little guy....
