How devastating! Over the years this has been our tradition to go to The Dog Team and gather as a family in the beautiful area. It is very sad to think of it not there any longer! Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this great loss and tragic loss.

On Saturday, May 24, 2003 the New Haven Historical Society and I were able to dedicate the Dog Team Tavern & The Advent Church into the National Historic Register. The loss of the DTT & Chris Hesslink is too much to bear. So much history & a great restaurant lost to Brooksville (New Haven), Vermont and beyond - internationally recognized by thousands. My "book," THE DOG TEAM TAVERN contains the history of the DTT & can be seen or purchased at the Henry Sheldon Museum in Middlebury. Can the DTT be rebuilt?

our family will always have the dog team in our hearts.

My great uncle Ebin Joy owned the dog team
My grand father came up with and build the relish wheel.

We our hoping we can rebuild the dog team just as it was
A terrible loss

I remember when the Joys owned the Dog Team Tavern when I was a little girl, but thank you for sharing the original of the wonderful relish wheel. It would be great if your family decides to rebuild it. Though I now live overseas, I enjoyed a wonderful meal there the night before it burned down -- but only found out today about the fire. What a terrible loss at so many levels.

We stayed on Lake Dunmore for a dozen years and always went to the Dog Team, a few times during our two week stay. It was a treat to be there, at what we considered to be the most fancy, comfortable place that our parents ever took us kids to. In fact, more than a five carloads of families would trek over together. We could not get enough of that corn-flaked fried chicken! I am remembering the great times... this was back in the late 1960's and 70's, when Johnny Joy drove his inboard all over the Lake and all the teen-aged girls would almost die, waiting for him to wave! Sometimes, we would lunch inside Middlebury College cafeteria and listen to all the students speak only in French. Then, there was that little bakery down the lane, with all the boysenberry pie that anyone could hope to eat! And, there was the A&W, too. So sorry to hear that the Dog Team is no longer there. I am sure that thousands of patrons are also remembering all of the good times that the Dog Team represents.
