"The American people have essentially voted on this proposal and really what you have is a situation now where I think that the president and the Congress are going to need to figure out a way to save face and -- and step back a little bit. And if -- if they let go of their egos -- listen, I've been on the other side of this where -- particularly with my wife.(laughter) Where I've gotten in an argument and then at some point in the argument it dawns on me, you know what, I'm wrong on this one and it's -- it's -- it's irritating, it's frustrating. You don't want to admit it, and so to the extent that we can provide the president with a graceful mechanism to -- to say we're sorry, dear, then I think that would be -- that would be helpful."

Obama's own words. Quite fitting for the current situation, aren't they.

<quoted text>
Listen carefully: When only sick people buy insurance, it's unaffordable. To make it affordable everyone has to be in the system. It's not fair for people to avoid paying as long as they're healthy, and then they get old or have an accident or an illness, and suddenly they want benefits from a system they haven't been paying into. It only works if everyone is in.
<quoted text>
So let me get this straight, by your logic, when I buy car insurance I should pay a higher premium so the drunks, poor drivers, etc. can be insured at the same levels I am, my homeowners shouldn't take into account if someone builds on a flood plain and I live on a hill side, and life insurance shouldn't be any different for someone say scuba diving than someone that walks at lunchtime. This doesn't sound like insurance but a windfall for those fortunate enough to be out of a job with a family, while my family picks up the tab and gets taxed for my private insurance plan to boot.

Quote: I never said everyone should pay the same rates. But your comparison is bizarre. Let's straighten it out: Rates are differentiated according to risk factors THAT PEOPLE CAN CONTROL, i.e. tobacco & alcohol use, weight, exercise, etc. You can't discriminate by age, gender, genetics, pre-existing conditions, or other things beyond people's control. But everyone eventually needs health care, and you can't just join when you happen to need it, therefore everyone has to be in all along. Quote

You're right, you never said everyone should pay the same rates, but you implied it. But according to this new bill, we're not going to pay based on things we can control. The premiums we pay will be community rated.“Community rating” refers to the practice of charging a common premium to all members of a heterogeneous risk pool who may have widely varied health spending for the year. It inevitably makes chronically healthy individuals subsidize with their insurance premiums (rather than through overt taxes and transfers) the health care used by chronically sicker individuals." At least I think this will be in the final version. Since the meetings have been held at midnight behind closed doors, long after most of us are in bed, who really knows what's in the bill.
However, in your analogy, people should be charged more if they don't exercise, drink, or smoke. But who's going to moniter that -- are you applying for the job as the insurance policeman?
To take this a step further, because the penalties for not having insurance are so low -- why should we sign up for insurance if we can't be denied for pre-existing conditions. I pay over $5000.00 a year for group health coverage (family). This is a high deductible policy. My family had less than $1000.00 in expenses including dental and eyeglasses. I'd be better off paying the $750.00 penalty, paying for my own medical expenses, and getting it when I get really sick. This bill may have a lot of people thinking like me and I've had health insurance through my work (various jobs) for the last 30 years. And if anyone wants to know why I have such a bad group insurance policy -- it's because I work in MA and since they started requiring health insurance -- the premiums just keep getting higher and higher with less coverage. So be prepared.

You Tea Party freaks just oppose anything modern or logical. Your goal is to keep America in the Dark Ages. Even though we're the only industrialized country without universal health care, and all others have cheaper health care and are healthier than us, you spew bizarre stories about death panels and becoming slaves to the welfare state. Ha! It hasn't happened in countries that have modern health systems, but still you spread these lies.

It isn't just the health care issue. You Tea Party types do your best to sabotage the U.S.A. in every way you can. If you had your way, we'd continue to slip down in the world until we're just an economic colony of Europe and Asia (it's already happening, of course.) And you're so extreme that you won't give up without another Civil War. You lost the last one, don't you remember?

I didn't see anyone in the responses talk about being a Tea Pary Member. So your statement just shows your ignorance and stuipidity. Kind of like your MSNBC heroine, Mika who said Lincoln is her favorite founder. So you think other countries are healthier than this country. Do you know that in most countries, a child isn't considered a live birth for a week or two. US counts a birth a live birth, if the baby is alive for one second after birth. Don't you think that might skew the numbers. If you get cancer, what country are you going to for treatment? Canada, England, etc. I know a woman who is a Britsh citizen but worked in the US, then moved to England when she got sick. She gets no treatment for her chronic serious medical condition because England considers it a pre-existing condition. So much for universal health care. Be careful what you wish for. To everyone else, have a good week-end, weather is beautiful outside.

There isn't a single true statement in this entire incoherent ramble. It's symptomatic of the kind of nonsense and outright lies that the Palin/Tea Party people are putting up to defend Big Insurance against health finance reform for average Americans. If health finance reform fails again, it's because enough people have been duped by this disinformation campaign. If that many Americans can be persuaded against their own interests, you could make the argument that this country doesn't deserve affordable health care. It would mean we as a country are too stupid to stand up for our own good.

Actually, it's all true. If you want to dispute it, how about facts and figures instead of name calling. In debate 101, I believe you have to dispute an argument with a logical response. I don't believe -- "your lying" constitutes an argument if you can't give me a reason why I'm wrong. Let's hear the exact disinformation campaign we've been subjected to. Facts, facts, facts. As someone said, if it's such a great bill, why does everyone need a bribe to sign on to it?
