Hello,

I'm thinking of moving to Springfield for a new job and am interested to know a little about the area.

What the crime rate is like? Do we lock down everything, sit with our backs to wall, and keep our guns loaded, or do we just take normal precautions that you would anywhere in the country?

What the commute like to Alexandra? 30 minutes? 45 minutes? 60 minutes?

What kind of neighborhood would a $275,000 house get me into?

Thanks

The crime rate depends on what section of Springfield you are planning on moving to. West Springfield, for example, is an area where you would take ordinary common-sense precautions. Areas closer to downtown Springfield (near the Mixing Bowl, Springfield Mall, etc) is a sketchy area that I would recommend you stay away from. Fairfax County police has a search engine that allows you to view crime reports surrounding a specific address (shows everything from noise complaints to more serious crimes). I commute to Arlington daily, and the commute time depends on what time you leave in the morning. I typically leave for the office around 6:30 AM and it usually only takes about 30 minutes via I-395. If you plan on leaving any later than 7:00 AM, I would allow for about 45 minutes if you're traveling I-395. Your price range of $275K would get you into a very nice townhouse-style condo (2 levels) in a safe neighborhood with a decent resale potential. If you need any info or assistance on purchasing, lender referral, etc., let me know.

Good luck!

I agree with West Springfield Mom -- stick to West Springfield. Or even a few minutes west of that in Burke.

Avoid "downtown" Springfield -- not a great area.

If you're from Maryland then you're probably well acclimated to the types of people in NOVA as well as everything bad that could possibly happen to you, so I wouldn't worry too much. If you were moving here from South Carolina, then I would be concerned.
