Made the mistake of going to Betty's Azalea Ranch. The staff is not very helpful and some guy named Steve in the lawn section was down right rude.

Lesson learned...Merrifield Garden Center is the way to go.

Betty's has the same selection and quality in products at half the price of Merrifield. Sometimes I'll go to Merrifield for some ideas, and then go buy everything at Betty's.

The cost is (no exaggeration) about 50% of Merrifield.

I worked at Bettys for 8years and it is a great place to work. My advice for people who are going to buy plants at Bettys is to go and look around, there is an overwhelming number of plants. The staff does not get paid much so don't expect them to know everything about plants, they work hard and deserve some respect. I met a lot of nice customers while I worked there and also met a lot of customers who treated us like we were just peons. Bettys is great.

Just avoid Steve, he's the owner and is the biggest pain. Everyone else there is great

I have many plants in my yard from Betty's simply because the quality can't be beat. Their patio plants and poinsettias are also the biggest, most profuse blooming I've ever gotten. Their selection is ridiculous it's so good. It sounds like there's some hidden beef in these discussions. Steve IS the owner and he's an encyclopedia of knowledge when it comes to anything regarding gardening or anything he carries - so if that bothers you, well, then go to Costco and buy the dried out plants that have been sitting in the dark for days- you won't get any advice there.

I like Steve. I enjoy talking to him. While waiting for him, i have seen him deal with other customers. He is always polite. He knows his stuff and gives good detailed advice. We like the fact that we can wander around and get what we want without being hassled by someone trying to upsell us. You get what you pay for. If you don't need advice go to Costco.

I have worked at Betty's for almost 20 years. Karen and Steve are amazing employers and are extremely accommodating to the special needs of their employees!
With regards to plant material, there is no selection like Betty's! I could, with my background, work anywhere but if you want "design oriented" good quality plants, Betty's is your only option. And yes, we are considerable cheaper than Merrifield! The same truck delivers our plants, we unload and they drive down the road to Merrifield where they have a minimum mark up of 20%. Yes, Betty 's is where I work and shop and Steve and Karen are awesome!

Betty's abuses its young employees and has a very high turnover rate as a result. One woman in particular, Beth, is downright cruel to young people who are unlucky enough to work for her. I am actively discouraging my well-to-do neighbors and friends from spending any money there, and to instead buy their plants from Merrifield or other stores. Betty's stuff is cheaper because of their labor practices, not because they operate a more efficient store.

That guy named Steve is the owner! He is the most knowledgeable and helpful landscape expert I have ever met, and I was in the business for 20 years. Only thing is, he is not very tolerant of jerks.

Horrible service for the second time and I bought my roses in Burke...if u shop around you can get much friendlier service,no stress, and great prices elsewhere!! I have never seen so many negative remarks made about a business but they sure have earned it. I called Steve up to place a complaint about Heather at the front desk based on her rude attitude and it was as if he didn't even care...

Merrifield has the highest prices in the Northern Virgina area. They are not the standard by which to measure a supposedly discount nursery. Betty's used to be a real discount operation, worth the 30 minute drive out from the inner beltway; now they are just another over-priced nursery.

Here is an example of the "great" service offered by Betty's--My wife and I went out to buy two large crepe myrtles. With good help from one of the field workers, we picked out two large plants at $260 each, and were going to pay a $114 delivery charge. The field worker mentioned that the crepe myrtles had been on sale for 30% off the previous week, so maybe they would do something for us at the cash register, and made a call to them to tell them we were coming up to pay. I asked the women who run the desk if I could get some consideration on the price due to the size of the purchase and the previous sale. After some hushed conversation between the two, and after looking at something on their computer screen, they just said, "if it isn't on sale, that's the price. If you don't want them we will take the sold signs off." Then they said, "You should keep looking at our website for specials," and turned to the next customer. When I got home I looked at the website and found that they had a large purchase rebate advertised that they didn't even offer me.

From time to time I drop into Betty's because it is near Costco. I always find their plants no better priced than smaller boutique nurseries in our neighborhoods. High prices--bad or rude service--you just don't need Betty's.

Like the place. Very knowledgeable employees. Always seem to know what they are talking about. Have never encountered the rudeness that several people mention here.

I, too have experienced the rude behavior and lack of professionalism that others speak of. I spent a lot of money having my yard landscaped by Bettys and it was not at all a good experience. Dead bushes planted as place holders in my front yard were the straw that broke the camels back. Would NEVER go back. I would not recommend them and in fact am paying another reputable landscape outfit to "fix" the mess Betty's left behind :-(

I'm 62 years old, live close to Betty's Azalea, and I have never been in my life been treated with such disrespect, rudeness, and venom over a billing error that was clearly the fault of the front office. Beth who I believe is the manager, accused me of stealing and once I proved I paid by pulling up my bank account information on my phone, she continued to accuse me! Why would I come back for another plant on the same day and come into the office to pay (like I did the first time) if I'm planning to steal? The billiing error was obviously a mistake by the young girl who took my credit card the first time, but instead of tyring to correct the error, Beth continued to accuse me of stealing. I was shaking and so upset to be treated like a criminal when it was clearly their fault. Never once an apology - just snide and hurtful accusations by Beth. Another employee saw how upset I was and said its clearly an "mis-understanding" but never an apology. There was no misunderstaning - I came into the office for pay for my plants twice in one day and they made a billing mistake! I'm sorry that I can never return to Betty Alalea's and I encourage everyone to watch out for Beth! She should not be in the service industry.
