LOWELL, Ore.— Lane County sheriff’s officers and Oregon State Police are hunting for a gunman who fatally shot another man Wednesday night at a church in the small Oregon town of Lowell.

A sheriff’s dispatcher identified the victim as a man and says no one else was injured.
KVAL reports the shooting took place at the local Kingdom Hall, a place of worship for Jehovah’s Witnesses.
The dispatcher says the shooting was reported just before 8:30 p.m.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Fred Swank tells KVAL there were witnesses and a suspect has been identified. He refused to discuss what was happening at the church when the shots were fired or how many people were present.
A dozen patrol cars swarmed to the scene.
Lowell is located southeast of Eugene

How terrifying this must have been for those people present.

We HEAR SO MUCH OF THIS LATELY you can clearly see the times we live in pretty soon they will have to lock everyone in and even then they could be locking in a nut who will hurt others .Gosh armed guards at church doors may be coming soon to your city or town . I bet they were terrified can you imagine ?

Update...
It looks like they caught the guy.
So far, the police is saying that they were acquaintances and that the suspect was found hiding in the woods a few miles from the hall.

Hopefully we will refrain from guessing what happened and just stick to what is being reported.

Times were when people would run TO churches and places of worship for safety, knowing there was a sort of unwritten code that they would find protection there.

Not so any more.

LOWELL, Ore.--One man is in custody Thursday morning after a murder in Lowell. Investigators say a man opened fire and killed one person at the Kingdom Hall Church of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Led away in a hospital gown from McKenzie - Willamette Hospital is 35-year-old Robert Riley Gonzales, the man that authorities say walked in to a church in Lowell and opened fire, killing 48-year-old Kenneth Harry Mort.

Neighbors of the church in this small community are rattled.
Dozens of Oregon State Police and Lane County Sheriff's cars lined the streets as officers hunted down a homicide suspect.

Chris Slater who lives just a few block away said, "It's a small town, this never happens, so it's kind of a little shock."

Slater says he didn't just come out to see what all the commotion was, he was also worried for the safety of his family.

And for most of the night, Slater was unsure of his families safety. That's because for hours police say Gonzales was still on the loose.

After a nearly four hour search on the ground and in the air, the news came down many in the area were waiting to hear...Gonzales was arrested.

Police say Gonzales and the victim knew each other, but they did not give any details regarding their relationship.

Looks like more is coming out of this.
Apperantly, the person shot was an Elder.
There were five Elders leaving when the shooter forced them all back in at gunpoint.

At some point, one of the Elders was shot and the shooter ran away.
Apperantly, the shooter is a former Witness
The Elder who was shot had put a restraining order against the shooter back in 2002 for stalking.
He shooter is married to the victims Ex-wife.

More to come.

Where does it say that the shooter is a former witness?

The papers say he is a former member of the deceased's congregation, not that he's a former JW. So that part's unclear. Both may have still been JWs in good standing. One article has a third JW saying how nice and mild-seeming both men were. Lots of question marks.

Sometimes good people just snap and go nuts. Everybody has their breaking point. It could have been an atheist or catholic or jw or mormon. It doesnt matter. Its just dont defend them a nd try to say he wasnt a jw or he was a former jw.No matter what he was he was screwed up from a mind controling cult that fryed his brain.
