2012 Election Map if Only White Men Could Vote

Since Tuesday, Obama's re-election by a rainbow coalition of Hispanic, black, and female Americans has been the subject of endless comment by left and right alike.

His re-election depended on votes from groups who couldn't vote under America's original voting laws – until the 15th amendment gave non-white men the vote in 1870, the 19th amendment gave women the vote in 1920, and the 24th amendment abolished poll taxes in 1964. Without those amendments, the 2012 election would look very different, as the map above shows.

If only white men could vote, then just five states would have elected Obama - Washington, Oregon, Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts - which means that in those states alone, more than 50% of white men voted blue.
