Sounds like a sucker punch by Laughrun. McHugh should have used better judgement, he was in a no win situation. Hope he gets better soon and does not lose his job.

This "Police Officer" was Off-Duty and engaged in a verbal and physical altercation with another person. He should have acted in a more responsable manner, as he is in a position of authority and should have set a better example. Engaging in an argument, and then taking the argument outside to fight, is not acting in a responsable mannor. Police officers are "trained" to act in a responsable mannor, and this officer should have done so.

That's so funny, I just got into an argument last night with about whether or not police tend to escalate violent situations or deescalate them.

I know this is totally off topic, but why is it that if I text and drive I may get a ticket? but Pittsfield's police officers can play computer games and drive with no worries. I see this crap all the time.

What have I been telling you about the Pittsfield cops? 90% of them are like this...verbally and physically aggressive, borderline psychotic, and they think they can do anything they want and get away with it. Just ask any of their wives! This cop should be suspended and the criminal he thought it was a good idea to fight with should be locked up! Save it all of you PPD ball-washers...I was proven 100% right in this case!

Don't try to be tough on here, we all have simpathy for anyone that gets hurt. The problem with Pittsfield are attitudes, you might think its ok to go out and settle it with fists, in any confrontation there can be harmful consequences like this. Now this guy Laughran, is tagged, right or wrong, one misque, he's done for. My advice, get out of Dodge.

I think this bar room altercation was settled and should be left at that. What's a 34 year old guy doing out drinking at the friends bar anyway? That's not a cop bar. I would like to know what it was all about. Any witnesses? Who threw the first punch? I guess maybe some loud mouth attacks you outside and you defend yourself only to fund he's a cop that's just bad luck.

Ones employment as a Police Officer does not make him fair game for every street punk out there.Police Officers have every right to enjoy a night out, without being hassled by everyone who ever got a parking ticket.I would hope that Mr. Laughran is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.Throw the book at him Mr.Capeless.

Looks to me like the police oficer was out of line in a couple of positions. Number one, getting into an altercation in a bar. Number two, consenting togo outside. This officer should be suspended pending an investigation.

I would like to know what time this incident happened. It is my humble opinion that Pittsfield should impose a curfew on all bars. Close them down early after an incident. If the people there cannot behave themselves, off duty police officers included, then the closing time should be earlier for each incuident.

The days of wild west type behavior must end.

The Police Department is like a crew. It does whatever it wants to do. Laughrun may find that out some day in the near future. Officer O'Malley will shoot him in the alley. The crime scene photos may be lost when they pry the knife from his cold, dead hand. I'd hate to spend my time looking over my shoulder wondering when one of those vindictive, doughnut eating bast*rds or one of their cronies were gonna creep up on me and split my wig. Especially after sucker-punching one of their own like a little b#*ch would.
One thing is for sure...no cop is going to try and engage in a fair fight after this! There is a reason you guys are provided with weapons. In the real world ( which you guys should stay out of when off duty , for your own saftey)there are some tough customers. If one of these brawlers does not know your an off duty cop and you mouth off you just may get decked. The officer should just accept that he lost a fight and take it like a man. No reason to make a big case out of it. And..stay out of tough bars when off duty!

As I aleays say, it's easy to knock someone down when you don't put your name on what you say.Mike is a good guy and anybody can get sucke punched. I'm sure he wasn't fighting just to fight. This idiot laughran must have done something to someone in the bar for Mike to step in. Put your name on your next post though, we'll see if you have any balls.

I agree with you Harry. The cops live in a world where they typically win, even when they are in the wrong. If someone doesn't back down to their nonsense when they are on duty, the person can quickly get arrested on trumped up disorderly conduct charges. And, it is not unusual for someone to be assaulted by a cop, but somehow get charged with assaulting a police officer!

Additionally, they typically respond to altercations in numbers high enough to insure there safety. But, take away the gun and the badge, and take away the large support network that they are used to, and they are on a level playing field. The problem for a few cops (like the cop in this story) is that after awhile they really start to believe that they are tough guys; even when they are far from it.

This cop mouthed off and he wound up in a fight. And, it was most likely a fair fight.(He obviously forgot that cops don't participate in fair fights as a rule). And, he wound up getting his flabby blue azz beaten. Not surprisingly, the cops are now scrambling to save face and they are trying to put some sort of twist on things. It's pathetic but predictable.......

One can only suspect that those with negative comments about the police are members of our beloved "low life" community.

Just think what the reaction would be if the shoe were on the other foot and the cop did this to someone he was arresting. Right?

The fight was over when the loser sucker punched the officer! Seems to me like the other guy was getting his arse whooped and had to keep the fight going. Even after the officer was knocked out cold from hitting the ice with his head, this loser continued to hit him....sounds like a big bad tough guy to me (sarcastic)
