It is somewhat unclear to me why we've purchased new and stronger guns (GEORGE W. CLAXTON Recorder Staff *3/3/2008 GREENFIELD -- The Greenfield Police Department is moving away from the sidearm that it has used for more than a decade in favor of a weapon with considerably more stopping power.) for the Greenfield Police Department at the time the School Department is looking at a massive layoff of teachers. Laying off teachers leads to overcrowded classrooms, leads to underachieving students being left behind, leads to dropouts and the seductive option of crime, leads to the need for our officers to carry better guns. Why are we perpetuating such a vicious cycle when we could nip it in the bud, so to speak? This is not Springfield. Yet.
The Greenfield Police Department is certainly not responsible for the latest education funding fiasco, and I in no way am implying that they do not use well the money they have. As a resident of Leyden Woods, however, I have seen what the reduced patrols have caused, and it is not pretty.
