A Springboro schools bus driver was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and endangering children Wednesday morning after an incident in which she was reportedly "driving erratically."
According to Springboro Police Chief Jeffrey Kruithoff the department was called at 6:45 a.m. by drivers in the area of East Central Avenue and South Main Street who said they had almost been forced off the road by a school bus.
Officers pulled the bus over on West Mill Street and made contact with the driver, 52-year-old Sherry Callahan, of Franklin.
"After sobriety tests were performed, it was determined that she was driving under the influence of alcohol," police said in a statement.
According to the district there were three students on the bus and they were safely taken the rest of the way to school by another bus driver. A district spokeswoman said the bus route transports special needs students to the junior high and high school. An aide was on the bus as well, according to the spokeswoman, and the district also will be looking into the aide's actions.
The district notified parents of the incident Wednesday morning via phone.
"Student safety is paramount," Superintendent Todd Petrey said. "It is our number one concern. A productive learning environment begins with our students' safe transport to school. I want to assure our community that we take this morning's event very seriously and will do all we can to assure the safety of our students each and every day."
Parent Amy Hiday said she was very pleased with how the district handled the situation and said she received a personal phone call from Petrey. "Springboro police also called our home to make sure we were aware. This situation could have been much worse, and I'm just glad that everyone involved is safe," she said.
Petrey said the bus driver will not drive a Springboro bus during the ongoing investigation and the district will take appropriate administrative action once the police investigation is complete.
Callahan has been scheduled to appear before Magistrate Jeff Kirby on Dec. 30. She was released on her own recognizance after appearing in court on Wednesday and surrendering her driver's license.

When you're driving down the highway at night
And you're feelin' that wild turkey's bite
Don't give Johnny Walker a ride
Cause Jack Black is right by your side
You might get taken to the jailhouse and find
You've been arrested for driving while blind
Now just the other night with nothin' to do
We broke a case of proof 102
And started itchin' for that wonderful feel
Of rollin' in an automobile
You could say we was out of our mind
And let me tell you we were flyin' while blind
Then they had us up against the wall
Hey it's only blood grain alcohol
And there ain't no cause for alarm
We ain't out to do nobody no harm
How could anyone be so unkind
To arrest a man for drivin' while blind
