Page 10 discussing High Schools That Work standards and our backsliding DECREASES in key areas. Why the School Should Continue to Address This Key Practice. According to Table 8, ONLY 43% Of SHS students have completed the HSTW recommended curriculum (Ohio Core), a 34 percent DECREASE from 2008. Although interviews indicate that this sharp decrease is the result of changes in the process for coding transcripts, versus changes in curriculum, the DECREASE is still noteworthy. Only 60% of SHS students completed 4 credits of CP English, a DECREASE of 33% from 2008. There was a 5% DECREASE between 2008 and 2010 with 77% of students completing 4 credits of CP mathematics. 80% completed three credits of CP science, a decrease of 12% from 2008. Only 55% of SHS students completed at least one concentration, 30% below the HSTW goal. SHS still offers general level classes (Algebra 1A and 1B, physical science, US History, and World History). Thus, not all students experience a collegepreparatory curriculum. Documents provided to the TAV Team indicate that CONTRARY TO the HSTW philosophy, SHS believes that offering low~level courses is in the best interest of students. This belief, however, was NOT SUBSTANTIATED by research or data.

And our current school board brags about recent expenditures in technology and looks to reduce teaching staff even more, thereby increasing class sizes......hmmm....even more opportunities for our children to receive less personalized instruction and assistance. If I was this parent, I would be outraged.

Let's take for example Korea Japan and Israel. Right now, on average, students in these countries are academically kicking the living bejesus out of their American peers. How can this be if Korean, Japanese & Israeli average classroom size is 67 more students than in America? Don't be outraged. The teacher's union who are on strike in Strongsville are recommending that parents pay attention to what is going on in their schools.
I believe they are correct in their concerns, but why should we wait until the teachers go on strike? Should not these helpful hints also apply to our current teachers? Maybe we would be able to discover why our performance levels are failing over 2000 children in our district? The union recommendations for good parents are as follows: WHO IS MINDING THE CHILDREN? HOW TO KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR CHILD If you are considering sending your child to school during the strike, please investigate what is happening at school: LISTEN to what your children tell you about the conditions at school VISIT the school and your child's classroom to observe conditions there. ASK to see the teaching license of the replacement "teacher" who has been assigned to your child's class. REPORT unsafe conditions or the lack of quality teaching that you observe to the Board of Education. These recommendations should be followed now by the concerned parents of this district if they want to know how our schools are really performing day in and day out. Most will, of course, be doing great, but some may be lacking in content, ability, or curriculum. Find out for yourselves, the union isn't always wrong.

Given the latest news from Michigan regarding the passing of Right to Work legislation in that state it is encouraging to know that Ohio is right behind them. No longer should teachers be coerced into to participating in an organization that contradicts many teachers moral convictions. See links below. Forced unionism is a Marxist philosophy and has no place in Springboro. Yes a teacher can opt out, but must still pay a large portion of the Membership dues. How about giving the teachers the ability to opt out and pay nothing. The Pro Union thugs that attend your meetings undermine and interfere with the Board's efforts of promoting fiscally responsible Pro Student/tax Payer initiative’s. The noise they make always leads back to what’s best for the teachers union interests with little concern for the Student or the Tax payer. Please understand I am thankful for the many great teachers in Springboro, it’s the Union who we have issues with. Please do not cave to their Thug Tactics, the Community is behind you and appreciate your efforts to be fiscally responsible. Unelected Union Sympathizers have no platform to constantly harass the BOE members as they are neither Staff nor Union Members. As Union puppets their only purpose is create division and discontentment within the Schools and Community. OGT lack of worthwhile standards and again nobody stands up and gives any answers for any of this, just give me more money or your kids will suffer.
Ask the high school staff if any of this is true or not. I looked up the same stuff Just Watching did. Still waiting for your clarification on your post. If you can find the question I will try and come up with the answer. Or you could explain to all of us why you are not defining the classification of "Proficient" on the OGT. A helpful tutelage from the Ohio Department of Education on the scales for the results on the Math test Limited.........012 points..........025% correct on the test Basic..........12.517.5 points.......26%36% correct on the test PROFICIENT...1827 points..........37.5%56% correct on the test Accelerated...27.534 points..........57%71% correct on the test Advanced......34.548 points..........72%100% correct on the test This is not a difficult test, take it for yourself, it is on the ODE website. http://www.ode.state.oh.us/GD/Templates/Pages ... Then wonder why after two years of preparation in our "college prep" high school, nearly 40% of the children taking this test score 75% or less, and still have not mastered basic math covering what should have been learned in grades 19. They even let a child use a calculator and provide a cheat sheet with all the necessary formulas required to answer the questions on the test. Seriously, who wishes to defend labeling a student who has mastered less than 56% of the math material as "PROFICIENT"? Only our high school administration team would sit in front of the cameras and present to the community 97.4% of our students taking the OGT were "PROFICIENT" and above. And then proceed to bask in the clapping and cheering from the union and the union supporters with a straight face.

This just in from striking school teachers in Strongsville, OH
“SEA President Tracy Linscott.“It is bad enough that the students have spent three weeks receiving a completely fake education, but to find out this is being done at a greater cost to taxpayers than real school is further evidence of the board’s incompetence.” I love the part of the quote that claims the children are now getting a fake education with the substitute teachers. A quick look at the Strongsville report card shows us that 40.6% of their students are PROFICIENT and below in Math. Based upon their student body population that would mean that over 2600 kids in that district are not getting the education the taxpayers of that community are funding. http://www.ode.state.oh.us/reportcardfiles/20... This place is passing only 59.4% of its students, how is this a real education Ms. Villamagna?

If you liked the day when they its delayed start once per month, you will love this one, ONCE per week delayed start. Section 15.11 Why they don't stay an hour AFTER school to do this is beyond me, you would soon see how important these meetings were by the number cancelled and how short they become on the teacher's hour. Considering that over 2000 plus kids in our district are not getting the education that we are funding, these demands do not seem to have much impact on that dilemma .

How many days do they actually work?
Looking at the accumulated sick days (15 days), personal leave days(3), bereavement days(5 days), standard holidays plus the school holidays(only the good Lord knows), etc, etc, etc 7.5 hours per day x 185 days is only 1387.5 hours per year. 8.0 hours per day x 260 days for the average private sector person is 2080. Holidays for the private sector a couple weeks vacation, New Year, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. 21 Days off per year. School employees get Christmas break (10 days), MLK Day (1 day), Springbreak (5 days), Memorial Day (1 day), Labor Day (1 day), Thanksgiving (3 days), Summer Vacation (75 days). 96 Days off per year. This is not even a full time job, 1387 hours/52 weeks = 26.67 hours per week. A person making $36,000 per year under this schedule is making $36,000 / 1387 hours =$25.96/hour $60,000 / 1387 hours =$43.26/hour $75,000 / 1387 hours =$54.07/hour Did I forget to mention the 14% that the taxpayers toss in to their retirement account? The teachers can put in up to an additional 10% if they like, but the taxpayers put in a guaranteed extra 14% that does not come out of the teacher's salary. $36,000 teacher is actually getting $25.96 +$3.63 =$29.59/hour $60,000 teacher is actually getting $43.26 +$6.06 =$49.32/hour $75,000 teacher is actually getting $54.07 +$7.57 =$61.64/hour Pretty good hourly wages
