Last evening, Lady Panthers varsity soccer began the 1st round of the regionals by defeating Springfield 12-0.

In the state of Ohio, high school soccer has a well established mercy rule of 9 goals. At 9-0, the winning team is not permitted to kick the ball into the opponent's net. From that point, until the final whisle is blown, the name of the game is soccer ball keep-away.

About the point in the game at which Boro scored their 9th goal, one of the players approached the Springboro coach and was overheard asking.... "what should we do now"?

The head coaches replied: "We can run it up to twelve".

This is not at all surprising. The board ought to seriously consider demoting or dumping Detmer and promoting Rick Shields.

Detmer is all about Detmer and Detmer's ego. If the shoe had been on the other foot, if the opponent's head coach flagrantly broke the rules by intentionally running up the score against Springboro it's not at all difficult to visualize a post-game beelining effort in order to file a formal complaint.

How about you idiots, come out from behind your screen names, because you have no clue what your talking about and we can meet at Wade field to discuss.

What are the chances of productive one-on-one discussions with such Type A individuals? That answer may be obtained by privately polling players, both past and present.

very interesting.... there is actually a mercy rule in a high school sport? So we ask the kids who train hard all year to not try and score any longer? I would also venture to say that you had some of the 2nd and 3rd string kids in the game who could use the chance to score, work on their skills, etc but yet we tell them now to score because the other team is terrible? I say tell the other team to go home and practice a little more and not embarrass themselves.

How long before he implodes with anger once again? If I were a betting man I'd put my money on the 16th.

To most sports fans this is an unwritten rule. Usually this rule goes along the lines of not running up the score. There’s no reason to show your opponent up when the outcome of the game has already been determined. You’re supposed to take the knee, shake their hands, and walk off the field with your integrity intact.

Stay classy Really, there might be some 87 year old men on oxygen that you can foot race at the nursing home.
